seriously agitated

Postby ltwally » 11 Nov 2005 22:33

I find myself seriously agitated with the latest beta.

The developers decided to add shell-integration to the explorer menu's, so that when I right click on any media format, or even a file-folder (even an empty one!), i see options to play with VLC.

This is all well and good.... but I don't want this feature! I have enough crap in my explorer menu, as it is, without more garbage.

To make matters worse, there was no option in VLC to disable explorer integration... leaving me with little choice but to manually clean out the registry myself. Do you have any idea how many entries there were for VLC in the HKCR ?? At least one for ever media format known to man!

Explorer integration may be something that a lot of people would like added to VLC, but it should not be enabled by default, and it certainly should have an option in the program itself to disable this feature.

Just uninstall vlc and install it again and don't select that option when you install it.

That's a really poor way of removing an unwanted feature. Either way, I don't need to do that -- I've already fixed everything by hand-editing the registry.

You find that easier? :p

As usual in Open-Source software: If you think that something is poor or should be handled in a better way: "Go, fix it yourself!".
If you want to write a script or something similar to modify the registry automatically, feel free to send it to vlc-devel@videolan including its source code so we can include it in our releases for other users having the same problem.
