solving the Audio distortion problem in VLC 0.8.2 on Windows

For reference, I have an nForce2 motherboard and am using the latest nForce audio drivers that will work on it.

My question: Does anyone know how to disable float32 for the Google Video Viewer version of VLC?

I had the float32 distortion problem with VLC but was able to fix it in both Firefox and VLC Player by disabling float32 output in the VLC Player prefs. However, I can't find a way to do this for the Google Video Viewer, which seems to have independent settings somewhere else on my computer (and no way to change them!)

Also, it seems to me that it would be smart to disable float32 support by default in the next version of VLC.

Thanks, after about 2 days of f*cking about, I finaly got it. Thanks to you guys/gals.

When I enabled it to win 32 my pc just gave up. So bad idea!
Disabled win32
Turned on 10 bands equalizer (in filters)
Deactivated float32 output (in output modules/directx and waveout)

Its all working! Asjemenou!

My System:
WindowsXP
nForce Audio (Driver Version: 4.26)
VLC Version: 0.8.4-Test (v0.8.2 before)

This is what solved the problem for me:
1) Disable the "float32" output
2) Enable the "equalizer" Audio-Filter
3) Setting "Pre-Amp" to "0.00000"

Note: I did keep "DirectX" since "Win32 Wave-Out" didn't help anything!

Why is Pre-Amp set to 12db by default ?????????????
This makes VLC much louder than other players and it causes audio overdrive!
IMO Pre-Amp should be 0.0db by default...

Actually, I am running a 64 bit CPU, it could be that, OR it could be that we all have the same video card which uses the same package of NVIDIA drivers???

I have a 6600GT nvidia gigabyte card...

I am going to try this one and see if it works.

I did change to Waveout etc..
But the solution was to rollback the audio driver version for NVIDIA to 6.14.442.30 25/05/2004.

I suppose Windows update updated this driver recently.

BTW: the latest driver before rollback was working perfectly in Media Player Classic. Why it was not working in VLV 0.8.2 ?

VLC is very good because it contains all the necessary plug-ins without needing Matroska, Real Alternative, etc. like Media Player Classic does.

VLC was first to play "everything" for me. Others then cought up.
But now, I am unable to play mp3surround and WMV-HD.
Got VLC 0.8.2 and works fine for/upto a52 content.
Any suggestions.

This almost worked for me--but I also had to click in the "high quality audio resampling" box in general audio, to remove the last of the noise and make VideoLAN 0.8.2 equivalent to the ZINF player for ogg files.

I have an nForce2/Win98SE system running nVidia audio drivers.
At the default settings, I get the dreaded screeching. It now works fine.
Although I used the shotgun approach to get it working, once I knew
I could get it working, I went back to see if there was one item
in particular that made all the difference. For me, there was.

Allow me to be verbose for the sake of others in my predicament...

From the Settings menu, selection Preferences, after restoring the
defaults "Reset All" and with "Advanced options" in the lower right
checked, I need merely go into Audio / Output Modules / DirectX
and uncheck "Use float32 output". Then of course Save and restart VLC.

I get the impression that difference people are having different
problems with different systems, but I hope this helps someone else
out there who might be having the same problem as I was.

The solution worked for me too.

On my stationary pc there is no problem, but on my laptop there was no sound. It is an Acer with AMD2500+ and 1024mb memory.

A strange thing is that when I close down VCL there was no sound from the laptop at all. I have Musicmatch 8 installed, and after trying to run VLC, and after closing it, the tracks was played on tipple speed in Musicmatch, with no sound.

When pushed ctrl+alt+del I could see that VCL still was running in the processes. When I stopped the process the sound come back on the laptop.

Well, now it’s fixed, and I’m thankful.

Start>>run>>dxdiag>>Sound1>> and moved the bar from full accerlation to emulated

ive only just started getting distorted audio. VLC worked fine until i updated my mobo drivers, Nvidia plaform drivers, (which changed my sound card drivers from realtek to nvidia).

just thought i'd point this out to see if it helps any1. ive not tried playing with any settings to see if it fixes it yet.

I have found a solution that worked for me.
I replace Nvidia Sound drivers with Realteks drivers.

After that it works with default settings,

So for you all with Nvidia drivers for soundcard plz change audiodrivers to Realteks.

to fix this (without changing drivers) all i did was in the preferences > audio output modules > select win32 > save and restart

just noticed this has already been suggested.

Same here ... still got horrible loud noise. Using AMD64 with nForce onboard sound.

I was having the same screaching problem with my nforce4 board (Asus A8N SLI Deluxe) util I changed the DirectX (via dxdiag) Sound setting to Hardware Sound Acceleration to Basic Acceleration.

Now everything works well - however, I wonder what I'm missing w/o the "full" accelleration. Hmmm...

i have the same problem. i have also a amd 64 cpu on an nvidia board and every movie i open the sound is very loud and it crashes. when i close vlcthe sound is completely death, i must restart my computer then. im using the newest version. what can i do???

for those of you switched audio output module from default to win32 waveout and got no sound, here is the solution that worked for me.
- reset your configuration (just to ensure)
- switch your audio output module to win32
- enable Equalizer 10 bands @ Audio > Filters section
- save and restart vlc

tdl: you got it wrong- the short tip fooled me to start with too.

Here's what you do:
(in preferences)
1) check the "advanced options" checkbox at the bottom right corner of the dialog.
2) now select audio -> output modules in the tree at the left and change the "output audio module" to Win32..
3) press the "Save" button- otherwise your changes will be lost

For all where it doesn´t work:

it didn´t work for me either the first couple of times i tried to switch!

the fith or sixth time i switched the output module it finally worked!!!

--> so try a couple of times! importend is to restart the client!!! not only switch and try to play a file! first restart vlc!
