2.2.1 frame capture is considerably slower than 2.1.5

Postby kingotto15 » 05 May 2015 15:12

Hi,

I like to take snapshots of whatever is playing on tv quite often (Satellite .TS stream from Dreambox).

I noticed that with VLC v2.2.1. the time it takes to make a picture snapshot (PNG format) is considerably longer than with v.2.1.5. The latter makes fast pictures one after another and with 2.2.1 it takes much more time in between pictures, rather frustrating.

Anyone have a clue? of solution? having the same issue?

Thanks,

KingOtto

We have a new PNG encoder in 2.2.x, that might be the problem. Try removing temporarily the libpng_plugin.dll and try again

Hi Jean-Baptiste.
This indeed brings back speed to the PNG capture process. What am i missing by not using the libpng_plugin.dll?

Thanks,

KingOtto

The libpng encoder is supposedly of better quality, but is slower.

The libpng encoder should now be slightly faster than libavcodec's png encoder in master (as of today).

I can confirm that the screenshots are indeed MUCH faster, and the quality is perfect for me so I'll stick with it ;)

Thanks for the tip Jean-Baptiste ! :P

PS : The new PNG encoder was taking several seconds to take a snapshot of a 4K movie on my fast i3770 overclocked to 4.1ghz with 32GB ram while the old one takes 1 second, and is instantaneous for 1080p movies. Also I'm surprised that the new encoder is presented as "better quality" when PNG is a lossless format ...

PNG is not always lossless!

Sorry, I didn't know . Anyways, the old library is much better. I think you should make the new library an option in the next version of VLC because such slowness on very fast computers is not acceptable. Keep up the good work ;)
