Installed 2.2.0 - Now NO H.265/HEVC files play

Postby netrex » 02 Mar 2015 14:38

I have the Samsung NX1, and I used to be able to play back the 1080p footage from it, it's H.265, but the 4K wasn't playing properly at all.

Now after I installed the 2.2.0 version, none of them plays, it just stops at the first frame and the sound continues. If I jump into the video, a new frame shows, but no video, and sound plays still.

VLC (both 2.2.0 Win64 and vlc-3.0.0-git-20150327-0402-win64) does not play my Samsung NX500 video files. It shows the first frame and then randomly displays a broken frame every few seconds. The sound is fine.
According to MediaInfo, here are the caracteristics:

Thanks for the suggestion. I switched Input/Codec / Hardware-accelerated decoding to disabled and it is better:
- 1080 30p videos played fine and smooth
- 1080 60p video played with lots of breaks and greys pictures. I guess that's to be expected to some extent if the CPU is too slow for that.
- 4K 24p video still remains stuck on the first frame. I would have expected lots of frames dropped but at least some of them should display.

Hi,

same bug here :

file to download to test : HEVC UHD 4K - 10 bits

https://www.transfernow.net/fr/91902819ym0j
another file :
https://www.transfernow.net/fr/330394i14jkx

With MPC-BE 1.4.4, works like a charme wirh 2% CPU with DXVA2 and my GTX960 NVIDIA (HEVC NATIVE)
WIth MPC-BE 1.4.4, without DXVA2 and Native HEVC graphics CARDS : 60% CPU but work (CORE I5)
VIth MPC-HC and DXVA2 COPY-BACK : 5% CPU

With VLC : nothing. Just the first frame (even with GPU enables)

So juste download this :

https://www.transfernow.net/fr/91902819ym0j

open it with MPC-BE 1.4.4 lastest build and compare with VLC 2.2.1

So VLC doesn't support HEVC yet.....

No,

https://www.transfernow.net/fr/91902819ym0j

doesn't work with VLC 2.2.1 , HEVC UHD 4K doesn't work in VLC.
(i've tried VLC nightly build too)

Believe me

and with MPC-BE 1.4.4 no problem at all with this HEVC in .ts container. GPU is used and CPU only 3% (with my NVIDIA CTX 960 that decode HEVC UHD 4K 10 bits (main 10))

https://www.transfernow.net/fr/91902819ym0j

https://www.transfernow.net/fr/330394i14jkx

Perhaps VLC is unable to read HEVC in a .ts.....

Download the files (link ), Try in MPC-BE 1.4.4 and compare with VLC......

Hi,

I think that the problem is that VLC decode only HEVC with .mp4 or .mkv container.

With .ts container, HEVC doesn't work.

Can you fix this ?

Here sample HEVC in .ts container and 10 bits :

Thanks for the update. I tried it on the file I described above with the nightly VLC build from today and IT WORKS perfectly. Thanks a lot VLC team!

Now gaining confidence I tried a 60fps file that the NX500 produces with this VLC version. Unfortunately I get a grey frame which quickly progresses to a fully animated video,... until the next grey frame a second or so later, which also gets its pieces coming up progressively for the next second, and so on.

If this can help, here is the MediaInfo information:

Actually it gives the same result whether hardware decoding is on Automatic, DXVA or Disabled. They are all 3 comparable to what I had reported in 03/04 when disabling hardware acceleration. I guess the only difference is that it falls back properly to software decoding when hardware decoding does not work. CPU usage is similar for all 3 modes (about 80% of the total 4 logical processors).

I have a laptop with 2 graphic cards, one integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 (low performance, low power) and an nVidia GT 540M (more decent, high battery consumption, which takes over automatically when needed). The "Decoder Device" in DxVAChecker shows information about the Intel one and lists no HEVC codec, but it ignores the nVidia one. To be honest I don't know for sure if the nVidia one has the required features to decode HEVC, but what I do know is that Cyberlink Power Media Player 12 does read these 60fps HEVC video without dropping a frame using only 60% of CPU.
I hope this helps.

Hi,
I'm looking for a solution to decode a 422 10bits 4K File encoded in main profile with x265 using the GTX960 gpu.
Actually, I already tried with MPC-HC and using the LAV filter, it is working well.
I would like to be able to run VLC in the same way.
I already tried ts and mp4 container but it looks that the hardware acceleration is not running.
Does anybody has already been able to run this type of configuration?
I would like to precise that DXVA checker is returning me the following configuration meaning that my configuration is able to run hevc-main10 in 4K (as MPC-HC is doing):
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960
MPEG2and1_VLD: DXVA2, SD / HD / FHD / 4KUHD
MPEG2_VLD: DXVA2, SD / HD / FHD / 4KUHD

Hi Jean-Baptiste,
I tried with the 3.0.0 version downloaded here:
http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win ... -debug.zip
and I get the same results, meaning the video is not smooth.
I tried already with ts and mp4 container ans I get the same results: it is not watchable, especially compared to what MPC-HC is able to do.
I can also add that the activation or not of the "hardware decoding" option return the same results and the same CPU load (+- 25%)

To be precise I am using the following cofiguration:
  • Windows 7 ultimate SP1
    Intel i7-4930K
    Nvidia GTX960 with driver 355.60 (relased 8/13/2015)
Is there a specific action to do before getting the the DXVA 2.0 HEVC decoding working?

Actually this is just the beginning of a project that should decode 422 10b 4kp60 before applying processing, so I'm looking for the best option and I was guessing that libVLC could be the solution.

thanks a lot!

Gabriel
