If using VLC 2.2.0 and trying to open or play MKV files within VLC this is a known issue that has been discussed in a bunch other threads since 2.2.0 was released...My other PC has a lot of video files. Mostly .mp4 and .mkv. I can stream .mp4 vids over the network very easily. But I can't steam .mkv. It just opens up vlc and nothing happens. It is not about file size either as some of the .mp4s are bigger than the .mkvs that won't run. I don't believe I had this problem in the past. Maybe a recent update did this?

The workaround is to use the following nightly build that appears to fix the issue of playing an MKV file within VLC that is stored on the network or on an external drive.
