VLC Media Player 2.2.0 and Open Broadcaster Software

Postby pal1000 » 03 Mar 2015 20:46

VLC Media Player 2.2.0 doesn't recognize video track of movies produced with Open Broadcaster Software.
Open Broadcaster Software is a screen recorder and broadcaster. I prefer it because it produces HTML5 compatible videos out of the box and is very light on processing power. I did not have this issue with version 2.1.5. Latest nightlies are still affected. When I attempt to play such video it behaves as if it doesn't have video track.
Open Broadcaster Software download: https://obsproject.com/.
Sample video: http://pal1000.3x.ro/shared/bugreports/ ... nd-OBS.mp4
This video is fully playable on Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center (on Windows 7) and Mozilla Firefox.

Hi all,
I'm using VLC 2.2.0 x64 on Windows,
I'm experiencing the same issue with OBS, my new video record and all my old videos are affected. It worked perfectly before...

I record with theses OBS settings :

--- Video Encoder ---
  • Encoder : x264
  • Max bitrate : 10000
  • Quality : 10
  • No CBR activated
Extension : .mp4

Video Size : 1920x1080 @ 30FPS

x264 CPU Preset Settings : Veryfast
Encoder profile : high

No custom x264 encoder parameters

--- Audio Encoder ---
  • Codec : AAC
  • Bitrate : 128
  • Format : 48kHz
  • Canal : Stereo
VLC don't even get metadata of the file, meanwhile it works well with Windows Media... True story. :/

Hope it could help someone to understand the bug. If you need specific information or sample video like pal1000 feel free to contact me!
Can't wait to see OBS recorded video back in VLC again. ;)

EDIT : This is the log (verbose lvl2) when I open the file on VLC : http://paste.awesom.eu/CherylLuz/bReY&ln

I can confim the issue. The mp4 from OBS does not play in VLC and I was really confused since it worked fine before I reinstalled my PC. Thankfully your post makes me believe it is a VLC issue :)

Updated Open broadcaster software to v0.65b which upgrades the bundled x264 encoder along with other changes, unfortunately this had no effect on this issue.

Jean-Baptiste Kempf comment was not clear enough. If he would have mentioned the 3.0.0 branch instead of 2.2.1 it would have been much clearer for me and I would have picked the correct nightly build to begin with. There is no 2.2.1 branch to be honest, just a 2.2.0 and a 3.0.0 branch.

I have the same issue: I am using OBS v0.651b and VLC 2.2.0 x64. My recorded clips does not play in VLC. Interestingly enough, the video does not play in QuickTime either. QuickTime is able to decode the audio though. I know Jean-Baptiste advised that this will be fixed in 2.2.1, but I have found a temporary work-around; if I transcode the OBS video in HandBrake (I'm using 0.10.0 2014112200), the newly transcoded video will play in VLC.
