I have this issue as well. Both x86 and the x64 version exhibit the same behaviour.

I tried installing the Visual C++ Redistributable Package but it still crashes when you click on the file associations button.

It crashes since vlc is using a new compiler version.
The issue is on x64 AND x86.

Has anything been said about this - rather infamous - bug?
Have anyone made any attempt to fix it?
Or have any way around (fix) been suggested ?
-
The bug is still (after YEARS) with us - here with version 2.2.0 - running here as 64bit on Win 7 Home Prem - all fixes.
ANY OTHER way of setting assoc's other than setting it file by file as Default Actions ?

After all those 0.057 years since VLC 2.2 came out, the bug is still under investigation: https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/11953 patch welcome

Yes, I agree that the bug have not been officially ticketed for very long, but it has been an often reported, well known error for many years.
Heres a sample from 3 years ago (there are older ones too);

Yes, I use Windows XP SP3.

But please, I do not attempt to offend here. I recognize that the bug has now become official.
So if we are fortunate enough we may get a resolution to this in the near future.

Here's the earliest reference I found searching through quite an amount of talk about this issue.
This is approx. 4 to 5 years ago.

Sorry for not realizing that there were mediums in the VLC community.

The bug was released with VLC 2.1.5 on 64-bits, and VLC 2.2.0 on 32-bits. So it must have crept in between February 2014 (release of version 2.1.4) and July 2014 (release of version 2.1.5).

So much for many years. On Mercury, right.

Debating about the severity or age of the bug is not getting the bug any closer to resolution.

Generating a human-readable stack trace and bisecting the crash in the source repository would be more helpful. Or put money behind a bounty.

Hello anuswara,

I just tested for example by checking .asf, double click on Register and close VLC, I have not had a crash.

Good day!

I can reproduce it.
Vista.

Why double click? I dont see this double click. Only "Save" option.
here:

If I dont change the associations I dont notice the crash. What could I do to avoid the crash?
on both my machines.
where can I find the logs of the crash?

Thanks for suggestions.

with 2.2.0 the crash happened just by clicking on Set associations.

now with 2.2.1 it happens only when I change some associations, clicking on botton Save (see photo above), and then I close vlc and I go the crash.
therefore I said that 2.2.1 *partially* solved the issue.

The problem with button "Set up assotiation", it seems, has been going on for 5 years. Occurs on different computers with 64-bit 8.1 Windows with all updates as of VLC 64-bit 2.2.0 and VLC 2.2.0 32-bit. Occurs in Windows 7 32-bit with VLC 2.2.0 32-bit. It was the same in version 2.1.5.
