Don't open media from Windows network.

Postby serj47 » 28 Feb 2015 21:32

I can not open media files on a network drive. Windows Network (SAMBA). I tried to drag and drop files to the player, and "Open with" VLC. This does not work :(
If I open through Media -> Open URL ---> smb: //Server_NAS/video.mkv it all okay! Video playback!

Windows 8.1+vlc and NAS server SAMBA

See the following thread started previously were people are having trouble running MKV files from external drives and from network attached storage.

Version 2.2 no .mkv support?
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=124431

I have no problems running MP4 files from network attaches storage (Samba). There's a slight pause but they play in version 2.2.0.

Edit to add: When attempting to play an MKV file (5 minute video - 1280x738) from my NAS it takes about 15 seconds load then play and occasionally stutters while playing (like its buffering). Same file loads and plays without issue from my local hard drive.

VLC plays all my media files from the network only direct links (OpenURL ...... smb: //.....video.mkv),, they played very well without stuttering. But Drag and drop files to the player or the "Open with VLC" works only with local files, and does not work with media files on the network, in VLC simply nothing happens.

Could you share the logs with the 2 different way of opening?

Indeed, Vlc 2.2 does not play *mkv on the network. I installed version 2.1.3 and it worked!
