New to VLC - I need help Please

Postby ddhhgh » 29 Dec 2014 22:54

I found VLC on Saturday (12-27-14) and I need help. I can record a You Tube from the "Desktop" Capture Mode,
but I can not get the sound to come on. I have tried a lot of the suggestions on Google but nothing works.
I know I am doing something wrong but I don't know what.

Please help figure out what I am doing wrong.
Thank you very much for your help.

I have downloaded the both the 32 and 64 bit versions and neither one works, I re downloaded the 32 bit, I don't know if that is correct.
I have Win 7. I am trying to use the "Desktop Capture" option, I have the "Output Module" set on "Windows Multimedia Device Output".
I am on a desktop computer, the "Convert Profile" is set to "Video - H.264 + MP3 (MP4)", The Audio Device is set on "Speakers - Realtek
High Definition ($1, $64) and that is what my "Volume Mixer says. My speaker drivers are current.
The Volume Mixer does not show the VLC Media Player, it use to but I have done something that it does not see the VLC Media Player.

I am just trying to play a video on of any kind on a desktop computer and have the VLC Media Player capture the desktop video
and put it in a file.

Thank you for you help.

try this:

Remember, when they say to right click on the video, they mean from the source file, not the vlc window

lifeoflead - Thank you for your reply. I followed the instructions on "Desktop Capture" on the link you provided. The only items that it
told me to do that I had not already been doing was to move the "Desired frame rate for the capture" to "30" which I did and also to change the "Profile" to (MP4) and MP4 was not listed only in "Video - H.264 + MP3 (MP4) so I used that one. Everything else I was doing like they instructed.

It still did not work, I have the Volume Mixer displayed showing the VLC Media Player while I am recording so it will display the bar going up and down,
I have not seen the bar go up and down once so I know it is not recording sound.

Can someone in this group or another please help me, tell me what you have your settings at when you record from the desktop.

Thank you very much for your help.

lifeoflead - You wrote "Remember, when they say to right click on the video, they mean from the source file, not the vlc window"

Here are my steps
1. Open Capture Device
2. Capture Mode - Desktop, Frames - 30
3. Convert
4. Profile - Video - H.264 + MP3 (MP4)
5. Destination File (This is just a folder I set up to send the video to)
6. I got to the Video (A downloaded video from my video camera - "MTS" file.
7. I start it playing .
8. I click the start button on the VLC player.
9. When I am done I click the square "Stop Playback" button.
10. I then go to the file and the vieo will play but with no sound.

Is there anything that I am doing wrong in these steps.

Thank you for your help.

I thought you were trying to download from youtube. Capture device is different, since I don't have your device, or the file with which you are working, I cannot duplicate the issue. For Youtube, what I meant was play the file from your browser, right click on THAT video, and save as. It is using vlc to find the youtube source file that is the neat trick. I am sorry for the cunfusion.

lifeoflead - Thank you for your reply. What I am trying to have is the ability to capture a You Tube video or anything that is running on
my desktop with VLC and download it to a file. The way that I have been doing it is to set up my video camera on a tripod and
video it and download it a file in the computer.

Here are my steps
1. Open Capture Device
2. Capture Mode - Desktop, Frames - 30
3. Convert
4. Profile - Video - H.264 + MP3 (MP4)
5. Destination File (This is just a folder I set up to send the video to)

6. I got to the Video (A downloaded video from my video camera - "MTS" file. and start it playing

6.5 OR I can go to You Tube and start the video

8. I click the start button on the VLC player.
9. When I am done I click the square "Stop Playback" button.
10. I then go to the file and the video will play but with no sound.

I don't know how to download a You Tube to a file.

I am using the VLC to capture the You Tube or the video that I downloaded to a file on my computer while they are playing
on my desktop.

Thank you for your help.

I just saw you tube video on how to download you tube videos.
I never knew that I could do that.
There is so very much that I don't know.

I would still like to be able to use the "Capture" anything running on my desktop
and have sound with it.

You do like to do things the hard way..... ok, back to that link, and follow the instructions. Basically, put the youtube url as your network stream; then copy the codec info, and paste that into your browser. That will send you to the ORIGINAL youtube video file, not a compressed version. While it is playing in your browser, right click on THAT video, and "Save Video As". That will save the original video file to your desired location.

lifeoflead - Thank you for your reply.
I found this on you tube on how to download you tube videos.
1. Start to play the you tube video then put it on "Pause".
2. Copy it the ULR (address of the you tube video) "CNT C
3. Put a "SS" inbetween the "WWW" and "YOUTUBE
4. Hit Enter
5. A new screen will come up.
6. Click on "WebM 360p"
7. It is now downloading the video
8. Click on "OPEN"
9. This will open to the downloaded file
or go to the computer downloads and drag it to the file you want.

I never knew you could do this, I am 72 years old and I am still learning.

lifeoflead - What if it was NOT a you tube video, if it was another kind of presentation that was showing from a web site
and I wanted to capture the video that the web site was showing on the desktop.

Thank you for your help.

What is "codec info" ??, Is that the ULR??

lifeoflead are there other people that can help you and me figure out why no sound will play in the capture mode.

Why are you the only one that will respond to my questions or offer suggestions.

The "Desktop" capture mode has to be able to record sound along with the video.

Somebody in all of the Forums has to have the answer for me on what settings that must be used to make this work.

Thank you for the help.
