Some TS Files Won't Play

Postby Dick K » 15 Oct 2013 13:53

I'd be grateful for help with a problem I'm having with VLC Media Player. I'm running
VLC 2.1.0 under XP Pro SP3 and find that some but not all .ts files consistently fail to
open in VLC - the program hangs, using CPU, but doesn't even get as far as displaying
the playing time of the file. The offending files play successfully in VideoReDo Plus
Version 3.10 and WinTV 7 V7.0, which latter program is used to record them from
broadcast TV.

An example of a problem file, test.ts (~1 GB), can be downloaded from the link
below (click on the file icon and then on 'Download'):

https://www.btcloud.bt.com/?shareObject ... 73ff4426a4

An attempt to play test.ts with debug logging enabled yielded:

libdvbpsi error <PSI decoder>: TS discontinuity <received 4, expected 0> for PID 18
libdvbpsi error <PSI decoder>: TS discontinuity <received 4, expected 0> for PID 18
libdvbpsi error <PSI decoder>: TS discontinuity <received 1, expected 0> for PID 0
libdvbpsi error <PSI decoder>: TS discontinuity <received 1, expected 0> for PID 0

VideoReDo can be used to report a video file's properties. The only striking difference
I can see between test.ts and a file which runs successfully in VLC is that the TS
Mux Rates for the two files are reported as 0 bps and 3200767 bps respectively. The
two reports appear below.

I've tried a several media players on the offending type of file and found that most
of them worked. The one exception was WMP with Haali Media Splitter DirectShow
filters installed. Xenorate, Total Media Player and MPC-H all ran without complaint,
which suggests that VLC may be a little over-fastidious. MPC-H is good enough
for my purposes so, regretfully, I've made it my default player for TS files and I'll
reserve VLC for occasions when I need its versatility.

Having arrived at a satisfactory workaround I'll stop monitoring this thread and delete
the online version of test.ts. in a couple of days because it's occupying significant
space.

Thanks to anyone who spent time considering the problem.

There are issues with some TS files but please provide a shorter sample.
Cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=57724&p=193335#p193335
50 MB max will be enough.

And you can upload it to http://streams.videolan.org/upload/ and then post the name of your file here.

Thanks for responding. Lucky I had another look at this thread. I've uploaded a file called dk_test2.ts to
videolan.org. It's the first 5 MB of another problem file and itself exhibits the behavior under discussion.
I'll delete test.ts now.

I have a similar problem...file will load but will not play. No time is displayed. I have several files with this problem and I'm not sure if they're all the same problem, but I've uploaded a 50 Mbyte sample from the beginning of one file chopped off using DGSPLIT. The name of the file I uploaded was "sample problem file_0.ts". Any help would be appreciated!
