Errors trying to stream videos from youtube

Postby 99lool » 15 Jul 2014 22:00

Hello I am getting errors when I try to stream videos from youtube can someone help me please? This is the sort of error that I get:

Code: Select all

Your input can't be opened: VLC is unable to open the MRL 'http://r5---sn-ab5l6n76.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?mws=yes&ms=au&gcr=us&upn=rnVYtvH7j0U&ipbits=0&expire=1405476000&sparams=gcr%2Cid%2Cinitcwndbps%2Cip%2Cipbits%2Citag%2Csource%2Cupn%2Cexpire&mv=m&ip=24.136.237.2&key=yt5&source=youtube&fexp=902408%2C902534%2C921912%2C924213%2C924217%2C924222%2C930008%2C934024%2C934030%2C935662%2C948902&initcwndbps=1252000&id=o-AG_M5QQjhJnNmnT45XFhnDoNo3u6YxLn672OFmaIbEt5&itag=5&sver=3&mt=1405454274&signature=4EF184B2C8F215455DFCCE374E887EFB98A6F1C4.2EE4F19CBDECC69BB739B896932DB3E49A5D2E43E4E'. Check the log for details.
It only happens with videos that I have watched a lot of like maybe 20 or 10 times or so, I believe.
This is the original link of the video I used to get that error: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bZkp7q19f0

I got the same problem under Windows (XP SP3) and Linux (Arch Linux, up-to-date) too with VLC 2.1.3.

I tried the video that 99lool attached attached in his previous post, and gave me an error as well. Error message below.

It seems that YouTube has changed something, because I found a lot of past threads about similar errors that were caused by a minor YouTube server-side change. Although, I don't really see how VLC extract stream links from a video URL, it did a really great job in comparison with other downloaders and desktop players.

I really love watching YouTube videos in VLC rather than using lamerized bloatware (browsers) that consume hundreds of megabytes to load a YouTube page, inconfigurable as hell and eats up all CPU. I hope this will be fixed soon. If I can help in any way, please let me know.

no one else has this problem? Odd. the youtube playlist addon page hasn't been updated, either.

It surprises me that nobody is concerned with fixing this. Watching YouTube in VLC spares a lot of electricity, CPU, memory and other computer resources. Users of older computers don't need to launch bloated browsers developed by lazy, ignorant developers, and they have the same experience. Please fix this, it's really important.

I have similar problem - VLC won't play some videos. I've found music videos aren't played e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gcg__eDktgY However, some other youtube videos works well.

The youtube.lua file was updated 10 days ago. Check http://git.videolan.org/?p=vlc.git;a=bl ... ua;hb=HEAD.
To use the new script, delete the youtube.lua or youtube.luac file you may find in your VLC directory and use this file instead as youtube.lua.

I'm afraid this may be a stupid question, but how do I use that link as a file? Clicking on the link directs me to a webpage with a wall of text. There's a bit about copyright on the top, and then the rest is code. How do I save this?

Thanks!

I hope this is not too late to answer your question.
The text you see when you follow the link is the script itself. You have to put it in a file called youtube.lua and save it in the right place (https://wiki.videolan.org/Documentation ... troduction explains what the good location is). For that, you have two options :
- right click on the link given above, select "save link as" and then choose the right name and the right place
- follow the link, select the whole text (ctrl + a) and copy it, then paste it in a new file that you then save in the right place with the right name

I'm a little pressed for time so I would like to get this in one shot! When I check my C drive using C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\playlist\ it comes up with luac entries. I assume I should just delete the whole lua (luac) file and replace it with the http://git file, which I have saved as 'youtube.lua', right? Just drop the 'youtube.lua' file into the VideoLAN > VLC program files, and Bob's your uncle?

Right. You can replace the "youtube.luac" file with the non-compiled script "youtube.lua".

Well, I screwed THAT up royally! Now VLC doesn't work at all. I'm going to do a system restore and then provide you with screenshots to see what I did wrong. I really need to get it working by the weekend...

I did the system restore back to the 16th, but as you can see, the date on the lua file are from the 22nd -- I didn't think to look for 'youtube.luac', and deleted the whole lua file! I'm thinking I have to uninstall and reinstall, right?

I can't figure out how to insert screenshots here, so I'll just use text:

C:>ProgramFiles>VideoLAN>VLC brings up a lua file, dated 10/22/14
When I click on lua, I get an http folder.
When I click on the http folder I get two folders:
js (common, controlers, jquery.jstree, jquery_1.5.1.min, jquery-ui-1.8.13.custom.min, ui)
old (another folder for js, which yields functions and vlm)
plus the cone icon.
That's it.

My computer guy did the original installation, so would you please send me the link to the reinstall, and I'll try it again! As I said, I would really like to get this working by the weekend...

You can download VLC from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html
Here is the relative path to the file of your interest in vlc folder: "\lua\playlist\youtube.luac"

You better download the latest nightly version of VLC (2.2.0-rc1) from http://nightlies.videolan.org/

Do I have to uninstall the regular VLC first, or not? Hope this works!
