Snapshot display ratio

Postby NileQT87 » 20 Aug 2014 03:17

Some videos, particularly in the .mkv format, will sometimes have a different aspect ratio between the file ratio (when it is not resized from the DVD source when ripped) and the display ratio it's meant to be seen in.

VLC player always used to take snapshots in the display ratio, but lately it appears that it's using the aspect ratio. So, let's say you have a video that is supposed to display in 4:3. The video is 720x480 because of that's how it actually is formatted on the source DVD (however, it's very smooshy), but it *should* display at 720x540.

Also, if you manually change the aspect ratio or crop a video with the VLC controls, it used to snapshot what was actually displayed in your VLC window, rather than the original file.

VLC player didn't used to have this issue. Also, 2.1.5 is far too buggy to downgrade to (it doesn't even exit properly). This is certainly the lesser of two evils.

Oh, and I'm using the latest nightly build due to said 2.1.5 issue. Forgot to mention that.

Anyone know what's going on? Please?

This is what's going on:

Should look like this and displays at this ratio within the player itself (.mkvs ripped at the original 720x480 NTSC DVD ratio which properly display at 720x540 and 853x480 respectively):

They are coming out this when screencapped as a .png (extra squishy at 720x480!):

I've reset settings, uninstalled, reinstalled... This did not use to happen on the same exact files.

The cropping and changing aspect ratios manually for the VLC player display used to also cap with those specifications. This no longer happens.

However, I do note that DVD .vob originals, unlike .mkv files, that have different encoding and display ratios, screencap properly at only the correct display ratio.

And I just had this same exact issue with .mp4 files of recorded television made with FilmOn.com that records widescreen at 720x480, but displays 16:9...

And once again, we have the problem that VLC's snapshot function doesn't snap the correct display ratio that actually displays correctly in the player anymore.

The snapshot feature needs to snap whatever is actually displayed in the VLC window (intended display ratio, as well as any manually changed cropping or ratio selections).

Having to manually correct the width/height of every snapshot from these sources that displayed entirely accurately in the player itself is tiresome.
