record button not recording video!?

Hi, Newbie problem. I have an avi file the runs fine in the the VLC player. When i want to record a clip out of it though, it just records the audio bit and not the video! (records to an mp4 file) I notice it works ok if i try to do the same with an mp4 file and record from it. any ideas what i'm doing wrong? is there a setting i need to change? (Windows XP and version 2.0.4 twoflower of VLC player)

No sorry, still cant get picture, just sound only, Anyone else have any ideas?

Convert the avi to mp4? If you only need to play it to record a clip? If you do then make a copy of the avi first and convert the copy in case something goes wrong
