DVD playback stops

Postby mikeandlucyg » 11 Jan 2009 00:40

Hi,
First feel that I must start the post with thanks to all who work on VLC it's great.
Now on to my issue...
Every single DVD I play stops at some point during playback. (This has happened to at least the last 20 DVDs, some I own, some hired, some brand new with no visible scratches, no copies and all genuine original DVDs)
Every DVD stops at a different place. But for each DVD it's consistently the same place that it stops. i.e. If I restart the DVD and play from the beginning or if I restart and navigate to just before the point, ... it will always stop at exactly the same point, the only way past it is to navigate past the point where it stops and play from there.

I'm running windows vista enterprise sp1.
Dell precision M90 laptop (Video card: "Nvidia quadro FX 2500M", DVD drive: "philips CDRW/DVD SCB5265 ATA device")
I'm now running VLC 0.9.8a
Used to have same issue on an older version of VLC (Sorry can't remember that version no)

Also just took a DVD that stopped on my machine and tried it on someone else's machine whi runs Windows XP (tried both using VLC and not VLC) and it worked fine. So it's definately not the DVDs.

Looks like some combination of my computer or maybe Vista and VLC. (I assume that it's not vista otherwise everyone with vista would have posted a similar thing because every single DVD i try to play has the same issue)

Any help appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Mike G

dvdnav warning: cannot get next block (Expected NAV packet but none found.)

You get same error if you rip the movie to hard drive and play it from there using VLC?

Hi Sorry, I wan't able to rip any DVD to disk. I tried following instructions found elsewhere in this forum but just goes round in a loop forever and never finishes. Any other things I can try?

Hmmm.
Just updated the firmware for my DVD player....
The last DVD I played doesn't stop at the place it did before.
It could be fixed.
I'll post again if it isn't fixed otherwise assume all is OK.

Four years later, same behavior still occurs in VLC 2.0.7 64-bit, 2.0.1 32-bit, and 1.0.5 32-bit. Surely it isn't a hardware issue. I've found no mention of a solution.
