VLC Subtitles = bad, DVD Subtitles = good

Postby bkeadle » 03 May 2010 23:51

When enabling Subtitles for a DVD through VLC's Video/Subtitles track, the font is fat and blurry, like this:

If I select the subtitles option through the DVD menu, it looks as it should, like this:

I've read several posts (complaining) about the same issue, but no resolution...that works. I've set the font render, specified font, etc., but no matter what I choose, it always looks the same.

I'm using the latest version, v1.0.5, and happens on both Windows XP (w/SP3) and Windows 7.

I saw v1.1 referenced in another post, but couldn't find where to download it. I'd be glad to try it if I could find it. Could you provide a link?

If you open Tools -> Messages... (set Verbosity to 2) before changing subtitle via Video/Subtitles track, does the messages complain something?

BTW, DVD Video movies use image based subtitles, so changing fonts etc. isn't possible.

Cool - "Messages (Verbosity to 2) - that's a new trick.

Here's the result:

Code: Select all

main debug: looking for decoder module: 33 candidates avcodec debug: libavcodec already initialized avcodec warning: refusing to decode non validated subtitle codec main debug: using decoder module "spudec"
Perhaps the warning is a clue? Thanks for your help on this.

Interestingly, if I choose a different subtitle track (track 8 ), it views correctly. But the English, French, and Spanish specific "tracks" display incorrectly.

Must be a bug in VLC.

That was my conclusion. :-) Will it be reported/worked on?

If you can provide messages with both working and non-working subtitles, I can open the ticket.

Sorry to necro such an old thread, but this has been happening to me for years. With the recent 2.0.6 "twoflower" release, and something I'm currently trying to watch, it's gotten me off my duff.

This happened to me in something else I was trying to watch today. Was there ever any discovery about why this was happening or what the fix is?
