Problems with player

Postby brimstone » 14 Sep 2005 21:04

This is my first time on this list, but I am trying to get some help.

I never had issue with my player before (0.8.2 has been on my computer for about a month), but suddenly it stopped working. It doesn't do anything. I open the program and click on Quick Open, and choose what I would like to watch and nothing happens. I even tried to reopen shows that I just watched a few days ago. Still nothing happens.

I tried uninstalling and redownloading the program and it is still doing this. I also found that message section under view and it comes up with a stack of gibberish (to me) ending with "successfully opened".

Am I doing something wrong? Could someone please help me? I haven't found any other program that works with .OGM files, so I would really like this one to continue functioning. The download site said that it was free, but was there some sort of time trial before I have to download it from somewhere else, or pay someone?

Note: I have read through all of the topics that list the same problem.

I have closed the program and restarted it.
I have uninstalled and redownloaded it.
I have reset the preferences.
I have rebooted the computer.

It still doesn't do anything.

Have no idea if this might be related but, on my pocket pc unit I have to change the port number some times. Its like its not getting freed up sometimes. Try just changing the port you are sending and receiving on?

Port Number?

Postby Brimstone » 16 Sep 2005 07:57

Please forgive the non-computer savvy, but where would I find said port number? I looked under preferences, but didn't find anything.

Sorry, I didn't understand exactly what you were doing. If you are opening a file on your own computer, then no port will be used. This appears to be the case for you. In my case I am sending the file to another computer (PDA) and must use a TCP/IP port (connection). Hope I didn't cause to much confusion

it's like this for troubleshooting..

if ever this is involved:
but suddenly it stopped working
and also this type of stuff is relevant:
I have closed the program and restarted it.
I have uninstalled and redownloaded it.
I have reset the preferences.
I have rebooted the computer.
then it means a voodoo hex has been invoked... I'm sure of it!

and it's not fixable other than buying a new computer.

well, or maybe there is some other information missing from the discussion?

I have the same problem.
Can't play any file. Not even only sound files. VLC says successfully opened but nothing happens.
When i open movie files i get a grey box with the same size as video resolution but no movie is playing.

I have tried with VLC 0.8.1 and 0.8.2.

I have been fiddling with the program and still the same problem. Someone please help!

If no one can help me, can someone please recommend another player to try?

Guest : I don't even get a grey box. It just stays as the small tab with the play/stop etc and file/view etc buttons. When I close the program, it will flash a black box about the size of the resolution for a second before closing.

zcot : What other kind of information would you like?... ((I'm being hexed, I know it!))

DanBrwn : I am just trying to open a file I have downloaded. A week before I first posted this thread, I was able to watch my movies. Now, not even those ones work.

ok.. I don't know what more information is needed.. :? -I really say voodoo!

alright, no, really though.. post a log. -that stack of gibberish.

as far as I can tell from the situation it looks exactly like a corrupted config situation, but you mentioned resetting the config.

this part has got to be something serious! but also, quite possibly the result of a corrupting configuration file and/or plugins cache.

run the log situation after you have manually deleted the config file and plugins cache directory. the FAQ has a point about the location of those files: http://www.videolan.org/doc/

I have finally had it happen!

The solution is to re-stabalize the machine(reboot).

The cause is that the machine has become too seriously unstable.

the same problem here:

VLC 0.8.4 plays nothing: no video, no audio files (mp3, ogg, xvid...) !!!

There is no video window shown, just if I press the stop botton, it appears for a tenth of a second.

the log window shows nothing I can relate to the problem.

very strange, I guess other versions 0.8.x had the same problem.

note: my machine is resumed from hibernation. maybe a reboot could solve the problem, but I cannot test this now.

as no other media player (mpc, mplayer, winamp) has such a problem, maybe there's some init stuff missing in vlc?

yes, I did reset my config and tried some options, nothing helped.

my system: windows xp pro sp2, nvidia geforce fx5900xt
