DVB-T Hardware Supported? -> ASUS "My Cinema U3000 Mini"

Hi all,

I installed VLC 1.0.0 to watch TV with my ASUS "My Cinema U3000 Mini" DVB-T USB-Stick: but I cannot open the device.
The error I get in the log is:

main error: open of `dvb-t://frequency=482000000' failed: (null)

It looks like VLC didn't recognize the device.

However, it actually works with the original Software from Asus and -I am quite certain about that- it used to work with an old version of VLC (could have been 0.9.1 ...). Well, as I've regulary updated and haven't tried for a while I can't tell exactly since which version it woudn't work any more.

Does anyone have an idea how to make it run again with VLC?

Make sure you have installed the correct BDA drivers for your device.

Basically I get (only) two messages:

dshow error: no video capture device was detected
main error: open of `dvb-t://frequency=482000000' failed: (null)

So I guess it's more likely to be driver related.

Well, I tried two drivers/packages from Asus: Package 3.0.0.1 and 3.2.1.1.

both versions use "BdaSup.sys" 5.3.2600.5512;
the differnce is obvisoulsy with the device driver: package 3.0.0.1 installs device driver "u3kmini.sys" 3.0.0.1 and
package 3.2.1.1 installs "u3kmini.sys" 3.2.1.1

"dshow error: no video capture device was detected" suggests a BDA issue(?), but how can I adress it??

EDIT:
I just tried a tool called "ScanChannelBDA_UK.exe", which I found in a different post -> "viewtopic.php?f=14&t=61758&p=206707&hilit=bda#p206662" and it worked fine.
It looks like it was able to find the device through BDA...

The error I get in the log is:

Make sure the frequency is valid and working. ScanChannelBDA can help you to find on air frequencies.

You also need to specify the channel bandwidth:
dvbt:// :dvb-frequency=482000000 :dvb-bandwidth=8

I verified the settings according to the ScanChannelsBDA.log (Transponder Freq. = 482000 kHz and Bandwidth = 8 MHz) - still same result.

However, I think the main issue relates to the other error, which I understand means the device cannot be detected in first place:

dshow error: no video capture device was detected

Any more ideas, please?

How does VLC recognize BDA-driver-devices?

I think here is our problem.
Seems to be quite the same as in this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=61758

So the BDA drivers need a DVB-T tuning space. But by default in XP (I'm not sure about Vista because I trashed Vista forever months ago) there is no DVB tuning space at all.

Some applications are internally dealing with the tuning space (e.g. DVBViewer), some other ones are creating the required keys in the registry during the first device initialisation (e.g. ProgDVB).
Looks like VLC is doing none of these and expects the tuning space keys to be already present.

So I'm not sure about the right way to deal with this. Let's hope KenS will read this and will find a solution soon.

this makes perfect sense to me. Having a look at the msdn I found this:

... there are no default DVB tuning spaces, because many of the required parameters are specific to individual broadcasters. In order to support DVB tuning, therefore, you must create a new tuning space and add it to the system registry ...

However, I still wonder how

dshow error: no video capture device was detected

relates to the missing tuning space. It might be the root-cause for it???

Only hint I can give you is to use another program first to create the tuning space keys in the registry.

IIRC the very first DVB app I've used, because I didn't want to install the big suite that came bundled with my device, is DigitalWatch from the same author as ScanChannelsBDA. It's light and open source. I've been lucky since I knew nothing about DVB but it gave me my very first DVB reception and images. So I believe this is the one which created the DVB tuning space keys.
Select your device and it will initialize it. Then perform a scan and tuning. Check some channels and if it works then close DigitalWatch and try again with VLC. Don't forget that you MUST specifiy a channel bandwidth value in VLC. Good luck

There is a feature to select and create System Tuning Spaces if for some reason they have disappeared from your registry or if you just want an alternative with different default values - this is mainly of use for those using DVB-S to handle the many permutations of LNBs, DISEQc switches, multiple cards etc...

dvb-name=XXXX selects a specific tuning space
dvb-create causes the name in dvb-name to be created as a new system tuning space if it does not yet exist. Relevant parameters from the command line are transferred to the new system tuning space.

So if you have installed your BDA drivers but they did not create a system tuning space - try that

Also, in your command line its safer to use dvb-frequency= not just frequency=
