Problem running 2.0.6

Postby unleasherofthefury » 11 Apr 2013 19:48

I am running WinXP and I just upgraded from 2.0.5. However, the program does not come up and when I check the process, the memory use keeps increasing. So I killed it when it was over 400 MB and uninstalled, then rebooted and tried to reinstall. Same problem. When I reverted to 2.0.5 it worked fine.

Any ideas? Thank you!

I am having the same problem.

Windows 7, 64-bit. Clean install of 2.0.6, no preferences, no cache. At the end of the installation process, when it should run vlc, nothing appears on the screen, and the vlc process is using 100% of one of the cores.

hmm! how much RAM was it using at the time?
I also had a huge spike in CPU usage.

More info:

What works: A clean install of the nightly build of 2.0.6 from Jan 11, 2013. No problems.

What fails: A clean install of the release build of 2.0.6. Nothing displays on the screen when running vlc at the end of installation, 1 cpu core is at 100%, and the memory usage climbed to over 2 GB of RAM when I killed the process.

I am having the exact same problem as well!!! I just did a clean install of Windows 7 (x64)... spring cleaning time ;)

- Downloaded and installed VLC 2.0.6
- Launched VLC Media Player
- No interface showed up?!?
- Tried to launch again... still no interface
- Checked task manager and a VLC process exists with memory increasing exponentially!!!!!

This is the first EVER problem I have ever had with VLC... I really hope this is fixed soon!

Thanks for great software!

Just a note that I removed 2.0.6, downloaded and installed 2.0.5 and it works perfectly just as it did before! There is definitely a problem with 2.0.6!!!

Also even though I am running 64 bit Windows 7 I am running the default 32 bit version of VLC media player and not the experimental 64 bit version!

Just downloaded nightly version: vlc-2.0.6-20130411-0203-win32 and it appears to install and run fine so far!

It appears that the problem has been fixed in the latest nightly version!

Thanks,
Gord

In Win8 x64 seems to be no problem with the 2.0.6-win32 version (I suppose all of you talk about 32 bit version, right?), so apparently is a problem with qt and aero or something like that.

Edit:
This thread has a similar problem:

Thanks everyone for replying. I think I will wait for the fix with the updated version to be posted on the official site.

Windows 7 Pro 64 - Same Issue

First I saw there was a new version...went into 2.0.5 and "checked for updates" and it told me there were no updates available! Hmmm. Manually downloaded and installed 2.0.6, it removed 2.0.5 for me prior to install as expected. Fired it up aaaaaaaand....nothing. I hadn't even noticed the memory leak until reading this thread. 2GB!

I'm disappointed!

Sorry, this is probably that you have taken a previous build that was broken. Please redownload it from our main servers.

I just downloaded it from the main page (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) and installed on a brand new Windows 7 (32-bit) system, and it hosed my laptop. When I tried to launch VLC, the window did not pop up and the system froze (couldn't even start task manager). I had to use hard reboot. Previous version (2.0.5) works fine.

Same problem, from the install available from the main page. I'm running WIn8 64bit (fully patched) and when I install 2.0.6 the app does not visually open and it will rapidly increase in memory usage until it takes it all. I installed the 32bit version from the main site. Uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled and had the same result. Never had any app, let alone VLC, do this yet.

Great, thanks. That seems to work w/o issue. Opens using about 6MB of ram and doesn't increase immediately unless playing a file. After stopping the file playing it drops back to around 28MB and doesn't increase (while I was watching).

I just downloaded this version and the version from the main page at www.videolan.org. They are different sizes, and the version from the main page is still broken.

Why is the broken version still the "official" version at www.videolan.org?

Ah, thank you for the explanation, I really appreciate that! It was puzzling me. And thank you for all of the work you do!

I just downloaded 2.0.6, installed, tried to launch vlc, it opened nothing, it slowly ate all virtual ram and my pc locked up

rebooted, uninstalled. wondered WTF happened because never had anything like that happen. re-downloaded, re-installed, same issue... but i managed to kill the task first this time.

finally found this thread, downloaded from the link above and now everything works

you guys really need to get those bad copies off the mirrors! it's really going to hurt VLC's reputation

Can anyone confirm if the official site has the fixed version uploaded now?
I don't have time to test it out myself right now.. thanks!
