At least in my tests Digidesign Digi 001 didn't work with VLC. Tools -> Messages... (set Verbosity to 2) should show (open it before starting the playback) that VLC audio output modules don't identify the device.

Hi, I've got the same problem

It looks like at one time, VLC version 0.7.1 had Digi Output:

From 2004:

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1514&start=0
Hello,

I'm having problems with the audio of the VLC 0.7.1:

The Digi 001 only sounds in the left speaker.
I've noticed that VLC only lets me select one of the 16 outputs of the Digi 001 in mono. The Mac internal audio of my G4 is available in stereo.

What I have to do?

Thank you!
But, (But!) they wre using Mac, so maybe there never was an experimental driver made for Windows?

My error message says

"aout_directx error: cannot initialize DirectSound"

Is there no way to init the Digi?

I have an 001 as well, I love it, despite that it is "old tech"

Ah - I did as you said, and I found these little gems in the log:
aout_directx debug: found device: Primary Sound Driver
aout_directx warning: cannot create a direct sound device
aout_directx error: cannot initialize DirectSound
aout_directx debug: closing audio device
waveout warning: waveOutOpen failed
waveout warning: waveOutOpen failed
waveout warning: waveOutOpen failed
waveout warning: waveOutOpen failed
main debug: using audio output module "dummy"

The Digi 001 default drivers don't support DirectX AFAIK. They support one WAVE extension but it isn't supported in VLC. In theory one could compile Portaudio output with ASIO support and it should work with Digi 001 but I am not sure.

It's what I get for using Old 'Tech, heh. Maybe I can try "ASIO4all" and see if that does anything. We 001 owners all are stuck using Pro Tools 6.4 and maybe Sonar 5 but not much else.

VLC does not support PortAudio anymore. ASIO will bnever be supported due to licensing incompatibilities.
