When will VLC support AAC audio codec in *.avi videos?

Postby thoste » 01 Feb 2013 10:46

As I found out AAC audio tracks in *.avi videos are NOT supported by VLC:

Why not?

When will AAC support added for *.avis ?

Ok, maybe you want to answer AAC is a rather new codec for a rather old container (avi). But that is not the point.
From my point of view VLC should be (and declares itself) a multi-purpose-all-round videoplayer.
Hence it should play every combination of codecs.

Except when format has limitations like not being able to handle correctly variable frame length (like AAC allows it). It is a lot of work for a, afaik, quite rare combination but if someone has time for that patches are welcome.
