If I telnet into the right port on the PC running VLC in Remote Control (RC) mode the RC interface comes right up...
Is there anyway to have VLC require a user name and password before allowing someone access to the RC interface?

RC is mostly meant for loopback connections. It's not secure enough for network usage.
