I love VLC but this has to be one of the worst upgrades for any software... lots of problems specially with sound and HD video.

I went back to v1.1.11 and everything works beautifully again.

@Jean-Baptiste Kempf

Please let me know with which settings.

I already posted mine with Autio output set to standard.

I'm also having this problem. I have Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium SP1 and listening through Soundblaster Tactic Wrath headphones (driver V1.1.1.2).

I didn't have this problem until I upgraded to VLC 2.

Setting the VOlume to 100% definitely doesn't remove the issue. Output was already set to Default.
Also in Comparison to the Windows Media Player, vlc audio quality really sucks. Distorted, less volume and whatnot...

Running on w7 64bit professional ed.

Re: VLC 2.0.0 Audio stuttering issue [somehow solved]

Postby 57093 » 26 Feb 2012 13:37

I am also experiencing the audio stuttering issue.

Things I have noticed - Playing files with DTS, Dolby Digital, MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a) or A52 Audio (aka AC3) (a52) the audio will not stutter.
- Playing mp3, MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3 (mpga) and FLAC will cause audio to stutter.

I too have only noticed these issues after updating to VLC 2.

HOWEVER, prior to updating I experienced another problem that has not yet been mentioned --> I use a Toshiba A660/07U (i7, nVidia GT330m, 8GB RAM) laptop as a HTPC. I have HDMI out to Denon Receiver/display and 3.5mm out to Onkyo receiver for music and outdoor speakers. I have VLC Output Module set to 'Win32 waveOut' and have 'S/PDIF' checked. I would usually alternate between devices by selecting the appropriate one as 'Default Device' in Windows sound settings. Output from VLC to 3.5mm does NOT work. I have played with the audio settings in VLC and I also tried resetting VLC settings, with no glory. ALL other programs will play perfect audio to either of the selected output devices.

I hope the information I have provided will aid in finding a solution to this issue.

*Re-naming the mentioned .dll files did not help.
I would need logs, please.

Hi Jean-Baptiste Kempf

As requested -

I played a .flac audio file. Output module: Default, Win7 64bit Default device set to HDMI (NVIDIA HD audio) Perfect sound output, no stutter or distortion (As OP previously stated, using Default Output module will stop the stutter) IIRC, a while back the fix for no DTS etc output was to select 'Win32 waveOut' and check S/PDIF output. Obviously this is no longer required.

I'm glad the fix for stuttering was simple enough. Lets hope the 3.5mm out issue is resolved just as simply.

Yes, I'm sure it will. However, reading through this thread I've yet to see an acknowledgement that the problem is product-related rather than an issue with a user's setup.

VLC is great software, which I recommend to my clients, so I'm keen to know if any progress has been made in finding the cause of the problem.

I have the problem with the audio, too. Audio is set to wave32. I have the issue with mpeg- DDL and DTS-videos - most of my videos, not all. DTS worked fine a few minutes, then my decoder started blinking and the DTS was blinking, sound was stuttering. DDL and mpeg stops all 3-4 seconds. Doesn´t matter if S/PDIF or analog audio.

Win7 x64
I5 2500k
ASRock Z68 Pro3
Asus Xonar STX (onboard disabled)

I can send you DxDiag, when you need VLC-logs give me a short tutorial how to log. Hope i can install the old VLC besides the new one as long as the problem persists^^

@ jean and vlc help

I have provided the information that was requested.

I have been patient, and allowed you time to work on this issue.

You have not even had the common decency to acknowledge the information I have provided, let alone respond to me addressing you directly.

I seriously hope that my experience is not common within this VLC forum.

Perhaps I would benefit from starting a new thread? I do hope so.

Me too. :)

I am also suffering from the echoing/overloaded speakers after changing vlc1.1 to 2.0.

I ticked normalize volume and set it to 1.6 in the volume settings - I'm running my vlc in finnish so it might be different.

This helps a little, removing the most extreme distortions but the audio is still not by any means normal. The biggest annoyance is changes in volume - I mean loud music, whispering dialog...

I'm sad because I'm a fan of vlc and opensource stuff for general and when I noticed the vlc 2.0 today I thought I had been running a needlessly old player and was excited to install it. Now I have to change back. Anyway this seems to be a very widespread problem and I hope it will be fixed. If there is anything I can do to help with my very limited computer skills let me know.

btw how old is the 2.0 version?

Changed the audio output from default to win32. This clears the distortions and sound is now fine but max volume is very low and I'm required to max out the volume from TV. I also unticked the normalize volume. Now the vlc 2.0 is usable but defintetly not an improvment from the older version for viewing avis, mkvs etc.

I'm not even sure if the audio is fine. I couldn't tell clear audio from screaming anymore, after two hours of playing with the settings and editing this post. My back hurts, I'm thirsty and I feel like crying from frustration.

Please help.

I also have been getting this since upgrading to v2.x

I tried renaming both of the dll's with no apparent difference.

Here is a bit of log. I get the "debug: audio output is starving" messages exactly when the audio skips. (and when I first hit play) This is all the messages from when I hit play, let it play a few seconds, and then hit pause:

Code: Select all

main debug: audio output is starving (-133638), playing silence main warning: audio output out of sync, adjusting dates (-43585 us) main warning: not synchronized (-43585 us), resampling main warning: resampling stopped after 347981569 usec (drift: 43200) main warning: buffer too early (-43200), down-sampling main warning: audio output out of sync, adjusting dates (-44648 us) main warning: not synchronized (-44648 us), resampling main warning: timing screwed, stopping resampling main warning: buffer too early (-87757), down-sampling main debug: audio output is starving (-54427), playing silence main warning: audio output out of sync, adjusting dates (-49397 us) main warning: not synchronized (-49396 us), resampling main warning: buffer way too early (-134772), clearing queue main warning: timing screwed, stopping resampling main debug: audio output is starving (-215320), playing silence main warning: audio output out of sync, adjusting dates (-40117 us) main warning: not synchronized (-40117 us), resampling main warning: buffer too early (-40118), down-sampling main warning: audio output out of sync, adjusting dates (-44781 us) main warning: not synchronized (-44781 us), resampling main warning: timing screwed, stopping resampling main warning: buffer too early (-83879), down-sampling main warning: audio output out of sync, adjusting dates (-44615 us) main warning: not synchronized (-44615 us), resampling main warning: buffer way too early (-126588), clearing queue main warning: timing screwed, stopping resampling main debug: audio output is starving (-161814), playing silence main warning: audio output out of sync, adjusting dates (-46589 us) main warning: not synchronized (-46589 us), resampling main warning: buffer too early (-46589), down-sampling
I have Windows 7 64bit ultimate. I had an earlier v2.0.x and just upgraded to the latest today and it still skips just the same.

I'm going to go find the old v1.x so I can play stuff, but happy to try stuff to get the new version to work...

Thanks
