MediaİD.bin on my Windows Backup

Hello,

i just backed up my files etc on an external hard drive using Windows 7 Backup

when i checked on the backup,the VLC icon (the cone)was there next to the back up

when i opened it,it said

ERRORS No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "undf". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.

What does it mean?

And why was it there?

A *.bin file is just a binary file. The *.bin extension is supported because that file extension can be used in conjunction with a cue sheet or simply used as a binary disk image of something like an Audio CD:

*.bin files can also be used for a variety of non-audio/video based things so not all of them will play in VLC.

Hi mysoul,

I had exactly the same thing happen and therefore wanted to ask exactly the same question as you. Hence Google bringing me here.

It's strange no expert could provide you with a simple answer to what seemed like a fairly straightforward question to me.

Anyway, I gather having VLC media player on the computer and doing a Windows 7 Backup just puts this VLC MediaID.bin file on the external hard drive for some reason.

I've done a few backups and just deleted the .bin file from the external hard drive afterwards.

It hasn't seemed to have caused any issues. each backup it just returns anyway.

To clarify the VLC cone next to it doesn't mean it is related to VLC in any way - just that *.bin files will by default try and open in VLC.

The answerer says if you already have a backup (presumably somewhere else) it should be safe to delete. The next time you create a backup it will reappear. This is also what BigBad64 says.

VLC cannot play MediaID.bin, since it is not a Video file.

By default Windows OS does not associate .bin files with any application.

MediaID.bin is required to restore backup files and folders. The operation may fail if the .bin file type is associated with an application.

By default, VLC media player 2.0.4 selects .bin as a default file association during installation.

At the [Choose Components] screen under [ File type associations > Other ] > .bin is preselected. This is a bug in VLC media player v 2.0.4
.bin should NOT be preselected during install.

"Yeah, I tried doing this when I associated some program to .bin by mistake but couldn't remove it. I recalled that there used to be some option in XP but couldn't see any option in 8. Here is how I solved it.

Create any file anywhere, I just made a .txt on desktop. Rename it to something.exe. Now right click on any file of the extension whose association you want to remove, go to Properties. Click the Change... button in the "Opens With" option. It will show the current program and there will be "More Options" link, click it. A list will come up, click the "Look for another app on PC" link at bottom. Browse to your something.exe and associate the extension with it. Hit Apply and OK. Now just go delete that something.exe you created and now your extension has no associated application."

I can confirm that this procedure works in Win 8 Pro. I simply created a text file in Notepad then saved it to the desktop with a .bin extension. Then I created another text file and saved it to the desktop with a .exe extension. Followed -Himanshu- procedure to associate .bin file to the .exe file I saved to the desktop. After deleting the .exe file, there was no longer any application associated with the .bin file type.

After un-associating the .bin file type, I uninstalled VLC 2.0.4 then rebooted the OS. When I reinstalled VLC 2.0.4 I deselected ALL file type associations. I think it's best to simply right click on the media files you want VLC to play and associate it with that particular file type on an as needed basis.
