VLC self terminating or shut off by another app...

I tried to change the skin of my VLC player and broke it. It opens and crashes so fast that it triggers DrWatson but its so fast Dr just gives me code 87, meaning that VLC is self terminating or another app is shutting it down. There is another error that says VLC is generating errors and is being shut down by windows.
I have:
1) Uninstalled and Reinstalled, and I tried making another path C:VLC or C:Players\VLC
2) Uninstall and Reinstall with Norton Cleansweep.
3) A regedit that removed all VLC references after I uninstalled it

No matter what, VLC "remebers" that it broke during a skin install.

I am running Aston Shell, but it never bothered VLC in the past...

reset the cache and settings files and such..

either run the shortcut that says "Reset VLC defaults and save"(if you installed from the .exe instead of the .zip).

or run this on the command line("cmd" or dos box, etc) toward your vlc installation:
C:\VLC82\vlc.exe --reset-config --reset-plugins-cache --save-config vlc:quit
(change the red part as needed)

Three questions:
1) How did you know that, or, where do I look to learn that stuff about VLC?

2) How do I shin VLC without breaking it? What did I do wrong?

3) I thought VLC was a light media player. When I checked it was using 12 megs of ram. Is that normal? Is there a media player that has a smaller memory footprint?

1. we are the freakin' bomb! haha.. no j/k. You can check the help output of the program to find all options.. -even get crazy and list ALOT of stuff(part of what takes up 12mg):

2. yes, I would open vlc and turn on the messages window so you can see the resultant errors of loading a skin at that point. When you turn vlc off(with the messages window open) then it will restart again with that window open(since it saves the settings, right?).

alternatively add this to the commandline or shortcut or batch file that starts vlc:

and if you are designing skins, you might have a check in the skinning dept:

3. no, vlc is more like a light operating system.. not a light media player I would say. yes, it could be roughly normal depending on what you're doing at the time and the condition of "Windows" at the time. You can get a much smaller footprint if you want to build it on your own computer changing the configuration.
