mission impossible ghost protocol DVD crashes vlc

Postby showtime » 19 Apr 2012 21:40

I put the mission impossible ghost protocol DVD (usa version) in the drive and selected open disc in VLC . VLC disappears from the screen and a dialog says VLC has crash.

I tried it again and the same thing happened. This time I clicked yes to send crash data to vlc.

When I tried to rip this DVD with dvd fab, the program reported it has > 9GB which does not fit into a normal DVD9. I have never seen this before. Maybe this is what causes the crash?

I end up using windows media player and it plays the dvd with no problem.

Does the disc work better if you use Media -> Open disc... and check No Menus option?

Yes, it now plays. However, there are other problems.

It skips forward or backwards a few minutes at certain times. This happens twice within the first 15 minutes of the movie. The first skip is backwards.

Another problem is it displays in the wrong aspect ratio, although aspect ratio can be changed manually.
I will only have the dvd until 4/24 if you want me to do other tests.

Thanks for looking into this.

More info about the DVD:

dvd has ultraviolet (allows viewing on portable devices)

I just wanted to second this - I've had the exact same issues. Usually when people say that, they mean they've had fairly similar issues. In this case, when I read the OP I thought I must have written it in my sleep or something. Same DVD, same symptoms, crash report also sent. I even tried playing without menus and had the exact same results as the OP (seemed to be randomly skipping chapters).

Again, WMP plays it fine. New kind of copy protection maybe?

Most likely.

Same issue. Ghost Protocol also makes SMPlayer behave erratically (forward/back controls, or clicking the timeline, crash the player).

Of course, this is the new protection format.

I have the problem that VLC plays titles in wrong order for the (german) mission impossible ghost protocol DVD, too. Nevertheless I can watch the correct order in Moovida media player. Maybe you have a look how these guys got rid of the protection.
