VLC 2.0 and Windows 2000

Postby stroboscopic » 28 Feb 2012 22:27

H Members,

Question # 1
Amazingly I'm still running win2k on my system. I have other computers running other OS's but still use win2k as my Digital Audio Workstation. Just never found the need to ditch it yet. Works rock solid until now. I was running VLC ver. 1.1.11 forever with no issues until I upgraded to ver 2.0. VLC will not load after installation. An error message pops up that says,

"The procedure entry point freeaddrinfo could not be located in the dynamic link library WS2_32.DLL.

If I can find a fix that will enable me to run VLC ver. 2.0 on win2k it would be great. Otherwise I will simply reinstall version 1.1.11.

Question # 2
I found a link that recommended to install Microsoft hot fix KB816542 for win2k. I installed successfully but the problem still persists. Initially I received "three" files from microsoft when I unzipped the download file. They are titled:

1) hotfix.txt
2) Windows2000-KB816542-x86-ENU.exe
3) Windows2000-KB816542-x86-ENU-Symbols.exe.

I unzipped all files to my desktop and successfully installed the executable file titled, Windows2000-KB816542-x86-ENU.exe. The hotfix installed successfully as I do see it as being listed in my Control Panel-->add remove programs list. The other file is simply a folder titled "symbols" with three additional subfolders labeled dll, exe and sys. There are other files inside these subfolders as well. Not sure what to do with this folder. Its just sitting on my desktop. Any idea?

Question # 3
By the way.... I do see a link for older versions of VLC for windows. Just curious why there is no link or documentation stating what Operating systems are required to run specific versions of VLC? A long list of older versions is very helpful but confusing if I have no idea what operating system is required to run the listed versions. I googled VLC system requirements for older version but found nothing. If there is anything I can do to help, please inform me.

Thanks again for a great media player, your time and support.

Newbie here!... so don't thrash for my lack of protocol, please. I am so thankful that Stroboscopic brought up his problem with installing the new VLC on Win2000 because I just had the same thing happen to me. What I want to find out is an answer to the righteous question posed by Stroboscopic, 'Why doesn't VideoLan.org tell us about the possibility of THEIR proffered update not working on OUR chosen O/S?' My second and final question is to Jean-Baptiste Kempf: What is PM-ing and why did you tell Stroboscopic not to PM?

I too experienced the same problem, rather unfortunate really, especially since the installer never seems to have checked the installed version of the OS, which would have saved time and trouble having to search for a solution.

May I suggest adding an OS version check to the installer for future versions?
