Slave Card

Postby dmelliott » 01 Mar 2012 20:50

My Hauppauge Colossus is set up as slave rather than master; that is, it just plays the component input, and does not control the settop box. Thus there are no channels.

How do I set up VLC to play the output?

Media -> Open Capture Device... select the device (and adjust settings if needed), then press Play.

I don't quite know how to respond to directions that say no more than: open it, set it, start it.

When such is attempted with the "DirectShow" setting, the following message appears:

Capture failed:
The capture device "Hauppauge Colossus Capture 0" does not support the required parameters.
Capture failed:
VLC cannot open ANY capture device.Check the error log for details.
Capture failed:
The capture device "Hauppauge Colossus Capture 0" does not support the required parameters.
Capture failed:
VLC cannot open ANY capture device.Check the error log for details.
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dshow://'. Check the log for details.

I would like to open the error log, but there is no link for this on the tool bar or in the startup folder, and I could not find it in any of the various W7 settings folders or the installation folder.

Using the "TV (digital)" setting, no error message appears, but trying all the DVx, ATSC, and Clear QAM radio buttons yields only a black screen.

What additional information would I need in particular for a Colossus slave card? This is not a rare card, so I am hoping that some one before me has tried this.

Messages can be seen via Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2). (open the messages before you try to open the device)

Since I could not find "Tools" anywhere in the player, Win TV v7, I looked in the startup menu. The subtopic under Tools are: BlastCfg, Restart IR, Restart WinTV Extender Service, Restart WinTV Extend Server, Stop Hauppauge TV Server, and Stop IR.

Perhaps it should be there, but it isn't, but thanks anyway.

You're absolutely right. Sorry, I have a similar thread going at WinTV, and got them mixed. My bad.

However, this is all a non-helpful distraction from the point.

I cannot say anything about the issue unless you provide messages. That is why I showed where it is.

The topic is capture from a slave card, not where to find Tools. But thanks for straightening me out.

Private messages is enabled in my profile.

Any help on the topic?

Hello. I found this thread because i have similar issue with Colossus card.
As asked from VLC_help i am adding debug that is under messages when i try to play from my capture device.

dshow debug: asked for Hauppauge Colossus Capture 0, binding to Hauppauge Colossus Capture 0
dshow debug: using device: Hauppauge Colossus Capture 0
dshow debug: EnumDeviceCaps: input pin: Analog Video In
dshow debug: EnumDeviceCaps: input pin: Input1
dshow debug: EnumDeviceCaps: output pin: Virtual Video Out
dshow debug: EnumDeviceCaps: output pin: Virtual Audio Out
dshow debug: EnumDeviceCaps: trying pin Virtual Video Out
dshow debug: EnumDeviceCaps: input pin media: unsupported format (video ??6?)
dshow debug: EnumDeviceCaps: trying pin Virtual Audio Out
dshow debug: EnumDeviceCaps: input pin media: unsupported format (unknown ??6?)
dshow error: capture device 'Hauppauge Colossus Capture 0' does not support required parameters !
dshow error: can't open video device

I hope you dont need whole log since i think i have found the place where device gives error.
Can we get this card working in some way?

The unsupported formats are the issue. Someone needs to code a fix.
