VLC V2.0.0 won't play ATSC digital OTA TV channel

Postby yardern » 22 Feb 2012 18:19

VLC V2.0.0 won't play ATSC digital OTA TV channel

I had it working on a previous version with command like this:
"C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" atsc:// :dvb-modulation=8VSB :program=1 :dvb-physical-channel=13
I don't remember the version number.

The same command line is not working any more with V2.0.0.
I am using Windows 7 64bit.

Any though please?

I actually could not find the log file.
I checked Preferences - Advanced - Logging, the file name is empty.
I put a name in it, saved it.

Run VLC again, no log file was created.

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin if it's too long.

With VLC + Message windows open, I could not use the command line.
So I opened Capture Device - Digital TV - Freq=210000kHz(Channel 13) - Major channel=13 - Minor channel=1 - Physical channel=13.
I got this:

I used 1.1.11 to watch ATSC, and also found it not working in 2.0.1. So I downloaded your nightly build.

This is the command line I had been using under 1.1.11:

Code: Select all

F:\VideoLAN\vlc.exe atsc:// :dvb-modulation=8VSB :program=1 :dvb-physical-channel=32
which no longer works.

In the nightly build, i started VLC with no command line options, then chose the Open Media dialog, Capture Device tab:

Code: Select all

Tuner card: 0 (not knowing what it should be) Delivery system: ATSC Transponder/multiplex frequency: 578000 kHz (RF 32)
I pasted the tail end of my old command line

Code: Select all

:dvb-modulation=8VSB :program=1 :dvb-physical-channel=32
into the Edit Options box on the Open Media dialog, rather than go through the Advanced Options (which generated a lot of qt4 messages)

When I pressed play, VLC generated these debug messages:

Code: Select all

qt4 warning: Input option: dvb-modulation=8VSB qt4 warning: Input option: program=1 qt4 warning: Input option: dvb-physical-channel=32 main debug: adding item `atsc://frequency=578000000' ( atsc://frequency=578000000 ) main debug: rebuilding array of current - root Playlist main debug: rebuild done - 1 items, index -1 main debug: processing request item: atsc://frequency=578000000, node: null, skip: 0 main debug: resyncing on atsc://frequency=578000000 main debug: atsc://frequency=578000000 is at 0 main debug: starting playback of the new playlist item main debug: creating new input thread main debug: Creating an input for 'atsc://frequency=578000000' main debug: using timeshift granularity of 50 MiB, in path 'C:\DOCUME~1\huygens\LOCALS~1\Temp' main debug: `atsc://frequency=578000000' gives access `atsc' demux `' path `frequency=578000000' main debug: creating demux: access='atsc' demux='' location='frequency=578000000' file='\\frequency=578000000' main debug: looking for access_demux module: 0 candidates main debug: no access_demux module matched "atsc" main debug: TIMER module_need() : 0.122 ms - Total 0.122 ms / 1 intvls (Avg 0.122 ms) main debug: creating access 'atsc' location='frequency=578000000', path='\\frequency=578000000' main debug: looking for access module: 1 candidate qt4 debug: Adding a new MRL to recent ones: atsc://frequency=578000000 main debug: no fetch required for (null) (art currently (null)) bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: Check: entering bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: Check: Destroying filter graph bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: Check: adding Network Provider to graph bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: Check: Creating Scanning Tuner bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: Check: Calling SetUpTuner bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: SetUpTuner: entering bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: SetUpTuner: Checking for tuning space bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: SetUpTuner: release TuningSpaces Enumerator bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: SetUpTuner: nullify TuningSpaces Enumerator bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: SetUpTuner: create TuningSpaces Enumerator bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: SetUpTuner: top of loop bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: SetUpTuner: need good TS enum bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: SetUpTuner: next tuning space bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: SetUpTuner: get network type bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: SetUpTuner: Found matching space on tuner bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: SetUpTuner: get unique name bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: SetUpTuner: convert w to multi bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: SetUpTuner: Using Tuning Space: ATSC bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: SetUpTuner: checking what we got bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: SetUpTuner: put TS bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: SetUpTuner: get default locator bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: SetUpTuner: create tune request bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: SetUpTuner: put locator bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: SetUpTuner: try to validate tune request bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: SetUpTuner: Attach tune request to Scanning Tuner bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: SetUpTuner: Tuning Space and Tune Request created bda_la-bdagraph.lo debug: Check: Calling FindFilter for KSCATEGORY_BDA_NETWORK_TUNER with p_network_provider; OK, I uninstalled the nightly and reinstalled 1.1.11. Of course, all the command line ATSC shortcuts I had set up work perfectly.

The 2.0.x versions had the adapter card option on the Capture Device tab. In 1.1.11, it was inside the Advanced Options on the Capture Device tab. When I looked in on 1.1.11, the value for Capture Device was set to -1. You can’t go lower than 0 in 2.0.x. I don’t know if that is significant or not.

I also did not have to specify a transponder/multiplex frequency in 1.1.11.

So I ended up with:

Code: Select all

MRL atsc://frequency=0000 Edit Options :dvb-modulation=8VSB :program=1 :dvb-physical-channel=32
Here are the debug messages from the working 1.1.11 VLC:

Busy indeed :)

OK, which version of Windows are you using? I was seeing crashes at that point when using Direct 3D. As J-B mentioned, at least it's tuning, so the problem is further along, probably when it's trying to draw the screen.

Another thought: is the VLC screen resizing just before the crash? if so, it could be another problem, not ATSC related.

You are the only person on the thread who has mentioned crashing behavior.

I simply don’t get any ATSC audio / video, where I did with 1.1.11. I will reinstall in a bit and see if it does any resizing.

OH - and your uninstaller is trying to uninstall 1.1.11 from a directory that doesn’t even exist. Guess I should make a note to go through Control Panel and always do it myself.

And no resizing behavior is noted.

1.1.11 accessed a “bda” module instead of the “dtv” module that 2.0.2 is using. Is this intentional?

Thought I would follow up on this.

I downloaded and installed vlc-2.0.3-win32 today, and the ATSC behavior has not changed since my last post in March 2012. The error messages still indicate that VLC 2.0.3 is trying to use a “dtv” module instead of the “bda” module it used in 1.1.11.

Didn’t know if you guys had tried to fix this or not.

dtv == bda.

For the rest, I do not know.
