well, I'll post this here as this section looks like being a Bug Report forum too.
and I post here this here and not in Feature request, cause IIRC, starting 0.8.6, VLC was able to display subtitles even when pausing the video.

don't know if it's related to the same issue but the subtitles also stop displaying when you press something like volume shortcut while watching the video for example.
