No audio suddenly

VLC player suddenly wont play audio. I tried uninstall, re-install but no luck. I'm not very computer literate, so if someone can walk me through it, i'd really appreciate it. I've been tooling around but haven't been able to solve the problem. Also, all my video and audio files have converted back to windows media player. How do I associate them with VLC again?

I don't think it's that but did you try to click on mute from audio menu ? (To turn it off if sound was muted)

For file association go to tools->preferences
There should be on interface's tab at bottom a button "Set up associations...". Click on it and associate back files extension with vlc.

Yeah I made sure the master vol isn't muted, and I do get sound from other sources, like youtube and on start up - and i checked that the audio card is working, I just don't get sound from VLC. Conversely, my Windows Media player only plays audio, but no video.
Also, thanks for the instructions on file association, but I use firefox and i couldn't locate any of the tabs you suggested. I clicked "options" in Tools, but couldn't find anything. My OS is vista, but I never had audio probs before with VLC. The audio just stopped working out of the clear blue sky.
I did get a new keyboard yesterday, but i can't imagine that would cause the prob - especially since vlc worked fine for the first day i had the new keyboard. Thanks

For file association you have to do it inside vlc.
I don't understand why you're speaking about Firefox.

For audio being muted I was speaking about vlc in which you can mute audio. When doing so it doesn't mute other applis or windows.
Additionally *in vlc preferences* you could look in audio tab if "enable audio" is checked.

Looking at your post I feel like you're not opening vlc (!?) but are using vlc plugin inside your browser.
So trying above make sure to open VLC (look in your vista menu)=> you should have a window looking like this :http://images1.videolan.org/vlc/screens ... 0-win7.jpg

Hey, thanks for the reply - I was able to make the associations following your instructions, but still no audio. I checked the internal vol on the VLC to see if it was muted but it's not, so....back to square one.

Ok, let's start from scratch.

1) Did you change anything or perform any functions on your pc prior to losing audio?

2) What Operating system are you using? Windows 95, 98, 2000, Me, XP, Vista, 7

3) What is the name of your sound card?

4) What type of file are you attempting to play? Is it an .mp3 file, .wav file .mpg file? What are the last three letters in the file name? ex: file played is titled, "pennies from heaven.mp3". The "mp3" would be the last three letters in the file name.

5) Look at your volume bar in VLC (located on the bottom right) and make sure you click on the colored bars until it reads "ORANGE". I know this is real basic but I just want to be sure all basics are covered first. In other words make sure the speaker icon does not have a circled red "x" over it. If it does, this obviously means you have your speakers "muted”. Click on it to remove the "x" and make sure the volume is "turned up" by displaying the "orange" colored bars in the graphical volume bar.

6) In VLC settings, go to Tools--->Preferences---> go to the bottom "left" and click the word "All". The "audio settings" should now offer more details. In the "Left" column, click on the plus sign (+) next to "Audio". This should expand the Audio directory. Select "Output modules" . Now look to the "right", what does it say in the box labeled "Audio output module"? It should say "Default". If not, click the "down arrow" and choose "Default".

7) Go back to the "Left column" and click on "WaveOut" (again under Audio--->Output modules). What does it say in the box labeled, "Select Audio Device"? Make sure your sound card is selected. If not, click the down arrow and select the name of your sound card.

Hey Strobo - appreciate the response.

1) No, nothing altered prior to audio loss.
2) Operating Vista
3) VIA High Definition Audio
4) All of the above
5) Vol is up, and not muted
6) Box does read "Default"
7) Drop down listed Microsoft Soundmapper(?) - I selected VIA High Def

<Sigh>...still no audio. I'll get it figured out eventually.

Problem solved. Audio restored. Turns out I needed to update/re-install drivers(not sure how they were un-installed).
Soon after I lost audio I went into device manager thinking it might be a driver issue, and I updated the drivers automatically - no favorable result. Then just a bit ago I tried again, this time selecting the card manually, and violla!...audio restored.
