VLC 2.0 final doesn't play HD videos propely

Postby prelfevr » 19 Feb 2012 03:07

VLC 2.0 plays HD videos very slow, sometimes it freezes and you have to kill the process.
I've downgraded to version 1.1.11 - this issue does not exist in versions 1.1.x.

VLC 2.0 (final) - all settings are default, Windows 7 64-bit SP1,
i5 750, 4GB RAM, GeForce GT 240 512MB (with latest driver).

I had the same problem, even with vers 1, now im using ver 2 and this is what i did:
1) Goto tools and open up Preferences
2) Goto the video tab, 3 down lefthandside pane
3) Right side pane, six lines from the top under Output choose "Windows GDI video ouput"
4) Save ur preferences

Not sure if this is the solution but it worked like a charm for me.

I'm having an issue of playing 1080i/59.94 Mpeg2 transport streams in full screen with BOB de-interlacing. Video will either freeze or play out very choppy.

I've tried to play this: http://www.bigbuckbunny.org/index.php/download/ - AVI Mpeg4 1080p - VLC freezes
and this http://www.furk.net/df/36fbf2dd1578c4cd - plays like on slow motion.

I think this is a serious bug in VLC since I didn't changed the settings and my hardware seems to be fine.

GDI is a bad advice, because it is slow.
If this works, then your drivers are broken.

OpenGL does not work?
OpenGL works fine on VLC 2. But is it the same video quality? What 'Default' uses?

I would argue that it is better than the default.

Stuttering means CPU not powerful enough. Not related to this thread.

9600 GT is enough for all Blu-ray videos and for stuff you can download (it doesn't matter if you use GPU decoding or not, that card isn't the bottleneck because of its hardware).

Well or me Windows GDI still works the only thing it plays the video much darker, i did not notice this until i switched back to default, but on default the stuttering is way to unwatchable. I see some people GDI wont work either, so the only conclusion i can come to it might be other codecs conflicting with VLC codecs, im not 100% sure about this and will only know if try to uninstall all my prev codecs and reinstall VLC, but am worried about other players etc.
PS. If i select "Hardware Decoding", its even worse :(

VLC doesn't use any external codecs. So it isn't codecs conflict issue.

It might be samplerate plugin CPU eating bug, too high number in FFMPEG threads option, too passive power usage mode or some sort of VOUT bug.

Update! After yesterdays update Nvidia display drivers i can now run HD using OPENGL setting, it seems a little better, but still compared to default a bit darker. Was running the 285 drivers before, now am on 295.

so i found out what it was..... so stupid really.... wasnt the players or codecs or anything. My tv is a newer generation samsung, about 2 years old, and it has that 240mhz refresh. well it was set on smooth and clear, I never checked just standard setting. works so beautifully now. sorry for your stuttering in vlc, but i dont think its worth it compared to wmp. its just so easy and i dont use any of the complicated settings in it. good luck to those in need.
