VLC choppy and high memory usage after a few hours

Postby caparzo2142 » 09 Feb 2012 00:45

Hello everyone,

I have been using VLC for years now and until recently i have found a problem with VLC.

after playing a few hours of movies
I first noticed that whenever i switch from fullscreen to normal mode the movie played quit jerky.
In full screen its seems like playing a game with lower fps, not too noticable but it gets annoying after a while, especially when compared to the smoothnes you get when you switch back to normal mode, but i hate having all the controlls on my screen when watching a movie.
When i restart the PC this problem is away until i play movies for a few hours again. It seems like my VLC gets fatigue after a while

What i also noticed is that when i have used VLC for an hour or 2 my memory usage goes up to an insane 80-90%.
When i use my PC normally without VLC its about 30-40%
i also play battlefield 3 and whenever i play it usually around 65% and whenever i quit it goes back to around 35%

Also when i close VLC after it has rissen to 80-90% it stays there, it wont really drop significatly, usually only 5%, so then my PC is still at 70-80% without VLC or anything else running.

PC has been scanned for virusses, malware and other sh*t that doesnt belong, but i found nothing.
I tried reinstalling VLC without succes.

MY PC specs are

WINDOWS 7 64 bit
I7 920 @ 2.67ghz
6GB ram
MSI GTX 580

I hope u people can help me solve this issue

thx in advance

Have you tested VLC 2.0.0 nightly builds?

I've recently started getting the exact same issue as the OP. Its like the FPS slows down to the point its noticeable, but doesn't skip frames or go out of sync with any of the audio.

I was having to restart VLC 1.1 usually around every 2-3 hours, but sometimes it would happen sooner - around 30 minutes in.

I just found the nightly builds today and have been running the vlc-2.1.0-20120209-0402 (x64) build for the last 2 hours and 21 minutes and the same problem is there with the fps drop. Still stays in sync with the audio.

yep, like Indievidulle said, i tried it with the 2.0.0 version and it still has the same problem

you'd expect RAM to go back down after you close VLC but it doesnt, thats whats so frustrating. Also the jerky video in full screen still occurs after about 2 hours of watching

nvidia has confirmed that there is a memory leak on video playback that will be fixed in an upcoming driver release...

mcantu: thanks about the info.
small question though, why should i install a 32bit version on a 64 bit machine?
Because 64 bit VLC isn't very well tested.

as mentioned in the links above provided by mcantu, the temp fix is to install older nvidia drivers. Not the latest 295 drivers which caused this issue.

I have tested it and i am using VLC again!! no more memory related issues :D
