VLC Media Player 1.1.11 slow open

Updated my VLC media player to version 1.1.11 The Luggage, but now it takes over two minutes to load the player. Once the player is loaded, it plays the movie clips very well, though. Any fixes to the problem of it taking forever to load the player? The previous version was very fast, no problems.

Remove/rename the %appdata%\vlc folder. That will reset VLC settings.

Did that. It still opens slow, although it opens very quickly in Safe Mode. The previous version had no issues on my system. What did they change with the newest version? I get the feeling it is conflicting with something, maybe a windows update.

There hasn't been any major changes in VLC 1.1.x tree (only minor bugfixes and some contrib updates)

I've had the same problem for the last couple of days

it takes 2 - 3 minutes to load a file and even if i delete %appdata%\vlc folder nothing changes, although I specifically remember having this problem some time ago and deleting the folder fixed it :/

Could you try to start VLC with logger window? That way you might be able to see where the loading part hangs.

i'll try that, but how do I start VLC with the logger already open ? as of now i can only start the logger after it took the 2 - 3 minutes to open VLC and if I don't start VLC from file it takes 2 minutes to load too but once VLC is running there's no delay

You have to do that from command-line, so Start -> Run and type cmd, then when prompt opens

Did the rc window popup immediately after you typed the command? Or was the same delay still there?

After/during the install vlc-cache-gen.exe should run and write .dat files to the C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\plugins\ folder.

But the startup shouldn't take more than few seconds even if those .dat files aren't generated. (I haven't installed VLC to my current setup, I only extracted .zip package and run vlc.exe directly from there)

tried using vlc from the zip package, oddly enough works without delay
i guess i'll be using it like this until there is some kind of fix

I'm having the same problem on Windows 7 64bit.

Uninstalled, deleted appdata, and did a fresh install.

I ran the "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" -vvv --extraintf rc command and it seems to hang on main "interface debug: looking for interface module: 4 candidates" part.

I tried running it from the zip folder and it's slow from there too.

You might be able to pinpoint the problematic file with tools like Process Monitor, which should show which files are used during the slowdown

I am also having the slow problem my computer too, tried ininstalling and reinstalling and this didn't fix it. This didn't start up until I got version 1.1.11 The Luggage. All others were just fine. I am also having another issue. The icon for it that shows on the taskbar is not the vlc icon but rather the icon that shows a white page with the right corner folded and a box inside with like I guess its programs or something. Looking in the start menu its the same way there as well. But if I put it on my desktop or if I go into the hidden icon section it shows the correct one there. I've checked in the program itself and the correct icon is set (took me a while to check this I've only ever done it in a folder and its been years since then). So my question is why is this icon incorrect? and then why is it so slow on startup, why is it constantly crashing, and then why is it constantly failing to send a report on the crash to you guys (8/10 times it'll give me a error saying report cannot be sent).

VLC 1.1.11 crashdumps won't do any good, since there won't be anymore 1.1.x releases. Next release will be VLC 1.2.x

I've had this problem over and over, over the years, sporadically with long periods of time in between, so I forget what I did to fix it. SO I am posting here not only to be able to find THE ANSWER when I google, but to also help you all who are just a freakin pissed and frustrated as I. Every GD google post about it is hyperbole, no fix!

With that said, it is your fault vlc is running like sh*t. The software works fine, the code is fine and any bugs it may have will be in a beta version and should be expected.

It could be a cache issue, not likely, but what the hell, check.

For me, every *&^(*^$&*( time its my AV or Spam protection. These tools always change so you forget. As of now, I run Malwarebytes pro. That was the culprit! I put an exclusion in and sweet baby jebus I got my awesome VLC back.

In Malwarebytes (pro) lays the problem. Go to Settings - Malware exclusions - select C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe
(maybe you have to add also C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc-cache-gen.exe)
Only with VLC.exe added VLC opens on my 8 gB memory PC in 3 secs now.

This thread this problem started with the release of 2.x version. 1.x version was always instant to launch no matter the permissions or AV software in use.
I was using the same OS, same AV software with VLC 1.x and then updated to 2.x and suddenly VLC startup became 10+ seconds.

The most impactful thing was to exclude VLC folder in AV software (using Avast, excluding "Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\*" R and X checked (read and execute)).
This has made VLC to launch in a few seconds or faster.
