It is one of VLC's lua script extensions. There was an IMDb extension included the previous Win32 release too (you can find it here BTW).

To stop extensions being loaded at startup go to:
Tools >> Preferences >> (Select "All" for "Show settings") >> Interface >> Main interfaces >> Qt

And untick "Load extensions on startup". Press "Save" and restart VLC.

Alternatively, if you want to just remove it/get rid of that particluar script/menu option you can rename the file extension for (or move/delete) the "allocine-fr.lua" file that is found in:
C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\extensions

So could e.g. just rename it to "allocine-fr.lua1". Restart VLC and it should have dissapeared from the menu.

Cheers, Arite.

Substitute é with it's URL encoded equivilant and works fine. Often copying and pasting from the address box does this automatically anyway (works with Firefox), but "é" goes to "%C3%A9":

I saw this in my VLC player too. Why was this extension included by default in the first place? I never asked for it, and don't appreciate third-party code being loaded into my computer without my knowledge. I downloaded VLC Player because I really like it, but I never asked for some app from some French movie site.

First the code is not loaded, until you click on it.
Then, if you don't like it, remove it.
Finally, if you don't like VLC, don't use it.

But I like VLC. Very much. I was just hoping you might explain the reason why some third party app from some company I've never heard of is included in the installation?

It isn't a third party app. It is just a lua script. There are lua scripts for YouTube, Dailymotion etc.

Thanks, I feel better about that. But as far as I know the Allociné script was the only one included in the installation. I did not see any others in there. Perhaps you can understand how, considering I do not live in France and do not speak French, it was quite a shock to see some French-sounding menu item in my VLC Player and having no idea what it is. If a sample lua script is to be included in the installation, wouldn't it make sense to include a couple other useful ones like the youtube one for example? Or maybe a link to download more, much like the addons menu in Firefox.

There are multiple lua scripts installed with VLC. They are in lua folder under VLC installation folder. Most of them don't have any GUI entries, so you won't see them directly, but they are there and used when needed.

Hi everybody,
What a great topic, I didn't know anything about "lua" extensions !
Many thanks to Arite in his 1st post, as he indicated a valid link to Imdb.lua, so I downloaded it and added it to Vlc.

Zap250, I guess you'd like to add it too. Here are 4 descriptive pics showing where to place Imdb.lua and what results you'll get. After it works on your computer, you'll probably delete "allocine-fr.lua" so you'll keep only Imdb in your Vlc menu

My OS is Windows XP, that's why the path is C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\extensions
I don't know if it's the same path with another OS
Have a Merry Christmas !

Cool - thanks, solazy! Well I learned some things here. I guess Allociné must be the French equivalent of IMDb but not of much use to those of us who don't speak French. So I'm happy to have copied the IMDb script to my VLC profile. Maybe I'll find more lua scripts to add in the future, but then again I prefer to keep things simple and uncluttered. Well that answers my questions, so I'll leave the discussion now. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all :)
