converting / transcoding issue: empty file, VLC closes...

Hello!

Trying to convert a downloaded, small (less than 3MB) mp4 file (which is played correctly), VLC just creates an empty (or in some cases an almost empty) file and closes itself. I tested other mp4 files, which were converted without any problems. Not long ago, the same issue appeared when i tried to convert some audio files.

Perhaps someone of you already had the same error or has an idea what could be wrong.

Open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you do anything else. The message dialog will complain when conversion fails.

So i did what you recommended: First, there was a problem: VLC exits almost immediately after starting the conversion, so I'm not able to check the messages window. After restarting VLC it's cleared.
I tried to get some information with the logging module. I don't know if they are very significant.
(The Verbose level was set to 2. I made also two logs with level 3, which are quite big. If it would be helpful, i can post also the big ones (or just the differences between them).)
Two videos (this time both in FLV format) have been tested, trying to convert them to an OGG-audio file: one which is converted without problems...

That's all. (There is no "-- logger module stopped --" in the second log, probably because VLC crashed.)

Could you share that file that causes the crash?

I uploaded one of the videos (FLV-format, 9,1 MB) which causes a crash. You can see and download it here: http://www37.zippyshare.com/v/22173794/file.html (It's a stupid Bollywood-version of Michael Jackson's "Thriller", but that's secondary.) Feel free to experiment with it.

Do you have an idea what exactly caused the crash or what is the difference between a "normal" MP4/FLV/... and those which cause issues?

Crash is a bug in somewhere, unfortunately gdb doesn't give any sensible info about it

Probably this issue won't be fixed anymore in the 1.1 release...
Converting the file with vlc-1.2.0-pre2-20111130-0206-win32 (extracted from 7z) works.
Sadly, this version causes some different troubles by refusing to play any video correcly, but conversion works and audio is played corretly... I hope this will be fixed at least in the final version.

There won't be any new 1.1.x release since there is no maintainer for that branch anymore. Next release will be VLC 1.2.0
