VLC stops working after a while

I've ran into a recurring problem with VLC. When I first log into windows it will let me play videos but after a while I just get a black screen & it changes windows colour scheme. So far the only way I've been able to get it to play videos again is to restart windows. The video output is set to default because all the other ones don't work or work very poorly with my computer. Any ideas what it is causing this problem? It only started to happen this week.

Have you tried to update your display adapter drivers?
