How to: Screen Captures

Some people have already tried to help, but I just can't figure it out. Can somebody please explain how to do screen captures with this program?

First we'll create a folder on your desktop where the images will be stored.
To do this open VLC, go to Settings, then Preferences.
Highlight Video. Click the Browse button. Select Desktop, click the Make New Folder button. Type a folder name.

Now we'll capture an image.
Open a file and while the movie is playing, click the pause button.
Go to Video, then select Snapshot.
That's it. The image should be inside the folder you just created.

Hi!

I managed to follow your instuctions till the "Highlight Video" part. However, my version of VLC doesn't seem to have the "Browse" part. Instead, it has a selection of filter modules to be used.

Please help?

run a video...

press and hold the [ctrl] and [alt] keys on the keyboard at the same time..

wait a second and tap the [s] key on the keyboard..
(you will see picture-in-picture type of overlay in the corner of the screen showing what you just snapped.. and it fades out nicely, not even getting in your way)

wait another second or so, and do the same.. tap the [s] key again..

do this a few more times..

stop the video.

close vlc..

go look in your "my pictures" directory(folder) on your computer. (alternately use the Start - All Programs - Search - Files and folders feature and search for vlcsnap*.png to bring up a view of your my pictures directory...)

Nope, I'm afraid it doesn't work for me. When I press "s" after "ctrl" and "alt", nothing comes out and nothing comes out after I close VLC and check the "My picture" folder as well. ^^;

I'm having the same problem. I'm using WinXP Pro SP2, VLC 0.8.2, specified a directory and have the same settings.

I press the hotkeys for a snapshot and I get the PiP, but nothing is saved to the designated folder.

Er, that was me above. After a bit of probing I found that the folder setting is bugged. It saved all my screen caps to:

C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\My Documents\My Pictures

As zcot said, you'll be forced to do a search for 'vlcsnap' if you're not running a similar Windows.

Question/problem: When i hit the pause button, it doesnt make a snapshot of the pic in the pause mode! It makes first a snapshot when I run the video again and then it makes a snapshot some 0.x secs later.

Is it normal that you just can do snapshots of running videos?

Yes ... (we need to rework parts of the Video core in order to fix problems like these).

I have a video that I want to play, but it is really dark. I went to the video preferences, but when I try to brighten the video nothing happens. Can you help me with this problem?

I capture images from a movie , this way
while movie is playing go to Video -> Snapshot
it's working , but it would be much easier & faster if there would be a single keybord key for this function

There is a hotkey for snapshot, which is Alt-Ctrl-s by default.
Go to Settings -> Preferences... -> Interface -> Hotkeys settings -> check off Advanced options -> Take video snapshot, to change this shortcut.

But we can just make a snapshot when the video is running! And this really sucks. With other software (dvd player) I can make snaps when I pushed pause button first.

Hmm, as far as I am concerned, I do can make a snapshot when the video is paused.
Could you please check if it is really not working for you?

I've simply removed the Alt & Ctrl keys , and now I can take a snapshot by presing only the S key
