@Jerbear

Tools-->Messages or Ctrl+M to open Log.
Verbosity = 2 = debugging messages enabled.

Does vlc crash or just not play?

The steps you describe are ok.

If it just doesn't play. I can only think of vlc being blocked by win firewall.
Sorry if I sounded a bit harsh earlier....

@colin

Are you using vlc 1.1.10 or 1.1.11 ?

It looks like you are using an old version. Please upgrade.

Then It seems mac uses precompiled lua (.luac) and not uncompiled plaintext (.lua).
No idea. I dont use macs. If you have luac on your mac you can try to precompile it. Ask in the mac section.

[Sorry if this turns out as a double post. My first 'submit' returned an error]

It's an actual crash (VLC will disappear and generate a crashdump file in %appdata%/vlc). The same thing happens on my Win7 64 bit machine.

Can't seem to get logging-to-file working...or maybe it's just not flushing output to the log file before it crashes.

The Ctrl+M log disappears upon crash (d'oh).
Attaching a debugger (no source at the mo...I'll sort that out later...just to catch the crash so I can peek at the state of the log pane), I see the last output message in the log pane relates to youtube_homepage.lua. That just happens to be last *.lua in VLC/lua/playlist.

So maybe it's just iterated through all the Lua scripts and crashes at the end because something unexpectedly ended up as NULL.

I don't believe VLC is blocked by Windows Firewall (Vlc.exe is in the Exceptions tab, and the auto-updater worked, so Vlc can clearly see the rest of the universe), though I've never really understood Windows Firewall.

Any suggestions on what I can do to produce something to help me diagnose the error?

(I appreciate the apology btw, though I don't blame you - my posts usually have idiot=true set)

Double post (would edit the other one but it's being moderated or something, and I want this message to come through quickly xD).

Seems to work now (both machines).
Not sure what changed, but I did a fresh uninstall, then install.
Also installed a Lua compiler/interpreter, but I doubt that would make a difference.

Sorry for wasting your time. Weirdness.

My vlc isnt playing youtube videos even since i put in the latest patch, it seems like youtube is always changing their page format which is causing VLC to not play them

Hi Casketizer,
I used your edited lua and I am able to stream videos, but when I try to save videos, only a small % are captured correctly. Most videos are captured with only the audio and no video. I have noticed that the videos that are successful saved are videos with poor resolutions (360p, low pixels). Any ideas why?

I believe it's 'broke' again...

Can anyone else confirm we need a new youtube.lua?

I tried the patch provided by Casketizer. When I load the URL into the device the video plays temporarily for about 2 seconds then freezes up. This happens 1/4 of the time with the same URL (I've tried 5 so far). I'm no longer receiving a crash message when the video doesn't play but instead i get the following error message from VCL.
---------------------------------
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'http://o-o.preferred.dfw06s08.v20.lscac ... cf76d3b27d'. Check the log for details.
----------------------------------
VCL might be timing out as a result of my internet connection (I have a 3g mifi router) The same URL will eventually load but like i said only briefly. I've also tried the vcl plugin for mozilla and vcl still indicates a crash on youtube via message.

I tried downloading the Mediafire file and overwriting the existing lua file.

VLC no longer crashes, but, I am now getting the following error :

File reading failed:
VLC could not open the file "www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3wPec4Xp7c".
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL '://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3wPec4Xp7c'. Check the log for details.

Can anyone help? Please???

Try this.

Open VCL got to tools-> messages then set the verbostity to 2. Close then open VCL to ensure changes were made. Check the message box under toos-> messages. If empty, try loading the youtube URL again. Wait for error message then go to tools-> messages and check the message box. If empty then you might need to search for vlc-log.txt, which i assume is in the VCL directory. If you find the messages save them in a file then post them here. I cant diagnose the errors but maybe someone else can. Im still a noob:D

Try replacing the file over again. Delete all of the old file before you paste the new file. Don't leave out any of the new file when you copy and paste.

Hi,

Unfortunately I was not able to fix the issue following Casketizer's work, but actually nothing changed for me: VLC still crashing as before :-(
I am not sure if this new lua file needs to be registered somewhere? (I simply put it under lua\playlist and renamed the old one).
I cannot get the output messages, as the box disappears very quickly at the crash. And I don't have any vlc-log file anywhere...

Thanks!

WordPad works just fine editing lua, text is in order.

Remove the old one. Otherwise they will fight from same file.

Same here. Hopefully the developers incorporate Casketizer's work into an upcoming build and I'd say he's well deserved of a credit in the Help -> About section. This feature is pretty neat once fixed.

Right. Casketizer's script works. Thanks.
Does anybody know how to change format? &fmt=xx parameter in URL does not work for me.
