No other mediaplayer crashes Aero except VLC. But only the latest versions do, version 1.05 for example does NOT crash Aero on the same system.
Does not prove anything
I cannot possibly see a driver issue here. BTW: Windows 7 detected my Radeon and installed the default drivers.
Trye to update to the latest radeon drivers, and see if it fixes your problem...
Well, if 1.05 doesn't crash Aero and later on versions do, it proves that something significant has changed or else it wouldn't crash Aero.

The weird thing though is that if i open a second instant of VLC-player and close the first one, Aero is restored while the second instant of the player is still playing. That's kind of odd because at first start Windows 7 tells me the program is not compatible with Aero, switching back to the basic theme.

As for the Radeon drivers, I updated them but it didn't make a difference.

I know it has to be my computer causing this, or else VLC-player would cause Aero problems for way more users than the few having problems right now. The only thing really bothering me is why VLC-player (current version) is the _only_ videoplayer causing this...

You have Overlay enabled. Use Direct3D with Windows 7.

Thanks, but that didn't work either......but.....

I installed the latest version 1.1.11 and the problem has disappeared! No more Aero-crashes! :D

But it doesn't play .flv files anymore with default settings. Anything i need to change?

Hi I just registered to mention I have the same problems.

Win 7 64bit.

What seems to happen is dwm.exe starts to chew through memory taking it to the full extent of available memory then Win7 stops Aero as there isnt enough available mem to run it.

The only thing I have noticed is that if I keep moving the mouse (USB - MS intelli) the memory keeps dropping its almost as if memory leaks when there is no activity.

I started getting the issue when I reinstalled windows a while back and installed a newer 1.1.7 (I think I updated it to 1.1.1.1)

If I change from direct3d to other outputs either the quality is awful (windows GDI output) or it kills Areo off straight away and restarts it once i quit VLC(directX (directDrawk) Video output)

OpenGL video output seems to be the once that works without turning off Areo and doesnt chew memory (dwm.exe sits at 145MB working 46 Mem (priv working set) and 62MB commit)

What display adapter drivers you are using?

ATI Radeon 4850 X2 (in crossfire) 8.812.0.0 Official Catalyst Drivers

also to add to the confusion it doesn't happen at all if I run VLC on my primary monitor only on my secondry one.

Is there some reason you don't use latest ones?

well i have to report i'm now having problems 'win7 64bit, aero theme'
like it's said above

start VLC by 'adding several avi files to playlist' and aero changes to basic
stop VLC and aero returns

start VLC with a single avi, using 'PLAY' or 'Add to VLC playlist', and all is okay
start VLC with a single avi, using 'PLAY' or 'Add to VLC playlist', and all is okay, add further file(s) (one or more) to playlist and all is okay

so from various tests i've narrowed the problem down to starting VLC by selecting several avi files and 'Adding to VLC playlist'

it's been acting up for a day and a bit now, and i do lots of different things with the PC
nothing else is causing a problem, so have concluded it must be VLC alone that is responsible, even tried testing VLC after clearing all caches, restarting PC, scanning for malware and viruses with updated windows defender and updated kaspersky IS, same results.

i've only recently installed VLC on this new set-up (win7 64bit) and it says it's the latest version.
Everything seemed fine for a couple of days and then out of the blue the 'changing theme' problem seems to have started. ~ NB: my usual method of starting VLC is to select multiple files and 'Add to VLC playlist'

Everything in VLC preferences/options is the default install settings, ie i haven't changed anything there.
~tell a lie, i changed preferences to single instance only ~ but that's all

VLC doesn't disable Aero. If you use DirectX or WinGDI output with VLC, the Windows disables the Aero. If other video output modules disable Aero, then there is display adapter driver bug in those drivers.

Note Didn't have any problems before. So I just installed 2.0.3 towflower.
And double click a video.. it opens up in VLC but then turns my windows 7 64bit into basic mode.. does it every time i double click to open a video from explorer or any folders..

But if I open VLC and drag and drop windows does not change into basic..
Also my graphics driver is 301.42(nvidia)

I have reinstalled VLC and deleted prefs.. it still changes into basic color mode

Edit:..

I just installed VLC 2.0.2 64bit.. No more basic mode with windows..for me now..
