I am using windows xp 32bit and with an embedded rtsp stream using vlc latest version (1.1.9) it crashes the latest Firefox (3.6.1.8) when closing the tab or window it's playing on. This has also been true for the past versions of Firefox.

This is a bad bug that has been going on a long time. Has the development and support stopped on VLC.

Browser plugin development is mostly stalled. So there are many issues with browser plugins.

Hi Jean-Baptiste, can you try to replicate the effect on an older version (e.g. 1.0.5).

My experience so far with the older version of the VLC is positive, i.e. the problem does not manifest... For my situation I daresay it's caused by new codes rather than a bug that's present even in earlier versions.

yes i can confirm this doesn't perhaps happen with older versions (i've only tried 1.0.5)
