Your soundcard control panel might have some "fancy" stereo upmixing feature, but VLC doesn't provide that.

Anyways, would be nice to have a native version rather than running in compatibility mode on Vista 64bit.

Give us some Vista x64 license.
============================================================
Easy!!

You can get a 90 day trial version of Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit (with all the functionality of Ultimate) from Microsoft's Website

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/eval ... 42495.aspx

(it gives you 90 days to develop without needing to purchase a license while being fully legal - you would be able to extend the time for another 90days of usage by reinstalling the trial again - you may want to have a look at the license agreement to see if this is permitted). You can also extend the period of usage by opening a command prompt and putting in the command:

slmgr.vbs /rearm (a day before expiry - again verify the legality of this in the license).

Upon installing the trial it will tell you that you have 10 days to activate (that's because the trial has not been launched yet, I don't know why):

to start the 90 day trial:

you need to go to Start Menu
in the search form at close to bottom, type Activate Windows.
upon starting the application, it will show you a license that expires in 10days. click on change license key and erase the license key, when the license key box is empty, press enter. By removing the license key, the 90day trial is launched.

I would also advise turning off User Access Control (it's annoying as --please stay polite--...)
you need to go to Start Menu
in the search form at close to bottom, type User Access Control,
select "change User Access Control" and when the application pops up dragg the knob to never notify me.

Any news on this topic? I've read some statements from 2009 that gave me the hope there would be a x64 version soon:
[...] and the mingw64 compiler is near to completion.

No news on this. AFAIK some contribs and QT4 cannot be compiled so stable release isn't possible ATM.

I noticed some QT4 changes in VLC 1.1.4 as well as some QT4 and FFMPEG updates on my Linux box. Does it still not compile in 64bit mode for Windows?

Best regards

Now that we have officially supported 64-bit builds of Firefox, IE9, Flash, and java, it would be great to have 64-bit VLC. I don't even particularly care about having the full VLC 64-bit, I would just like a 64-bit plugin for Firefox 64-bit (or even something like nspluginwrapper ported to windows).

Anyways, I'm going to try out compiling VLC with mingw-w64. I found a site that has 64-bit specific libraries for mingw-w64.

For anyone else who wants to try it out themselves, here are some generic VLC compiling resources and some 64-bit compiling resources:

I'll post updates and info on exact steps I take for any other whiners like me  that want x64 VLC ASAP.

You can get from Microsoft - free - 64 bit versions of DirectX, their OS (albeit a virtual machine), and all their development tools (albeit not full versions - but way more than enough to do a 64 bit version of vlc).

64 bit programs are not simply about variables and such being in 64 bit... but I think you know that.

The bottom line is that a 64 bit version of VLC would indeed run faster on 64 bit systems - especially using the latest directx packages (its up to 11 now guys and 64 bit has been out since well before 2006).

So since you asked for a compiler, directx, and an os license in 64 bit to be able to put it out in 64 bit - I can provide the links for each if you really need it - but again I think you can easily find these yourself (e.g. virtual machine for Windows 2008 64 bit, their basic (which isnt really basic at all) compilers (Im sure you can get use to a GUI compiler fairly easily), and directx libraries and development resources.

So although the comments before on why you can't do a 64 bit version are cute, but misleading - and although your view of a 64 bit program not running significantly faster is just plain wrong (unless the coders really botch the f&ck out of it - which I doubt in this case considering the talent) - then there really isn't a valid excuse anymore as to why not put out a 64-bit version - other than you don't want to put in the effort. Is that the case really?

You mean without some work, yeah thats true. With some work, nope, it can. Yes it may be a lot of work - or not very much - depends on how intelligently it was originally designed and if Windows was taken into account at all with that design or re-designs since then. Either which way - been there done that as a software engineer many many times over. I doubt seriously though the result would be worth less than the effort to the Windows community.

Captcha messed with my eyes. Works great though.

It is increasingly frustrating and disturbing the arrogance of the Microsoft Corporation. I feel very sad for those have have been swallowed by the Borg. It never seems to end well for the consumed.

Imagine, the power Windows if they would descide to scrap the old relic and build it from scratch, implementing the good they have learned and leaving behind the useless?

Look at Android and iOS. Amazing what you can do with those OSes...designed with the future in mind. (Of course, we'll need to wait and see what the G is doing with Linux in Android 3.xx -code not released yet).

Short story, Microsoft needs to start releasing some Dev Tools that will allow easier compiling into their OS or they are going to become irrelivant. Oh wait, they already are feeling that pain (i.e.: Windows 7 Mobile).

A true Oxymoron: MicroSOFT - Windows 7 (the anti-micro, OS)

Windows History
Image
:D Windows 1.01= RAM/256K; Storage/2 Dbl Sided Floppies (less than 6000K)
Image
 Windows 7.00 = RAM/2097152K; Storage/20971520K

Wouldn't it be nice if Microsoft gave a base OS that had options we could choose so it would do exactly what we wanted it to do?

So, back to relevancy...
I can perform QA testing and have all Windows OSes in my possesion. Please let me know if you require any testing assitance, if you have any Functional Specifications or Test Cases that I can use and what your timeline is like. I'll do my best to help.

Are there going to be any more Win64 builds for VLC? None of the builds in http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win64/ will work. There is no GUI or anything. They either crash immediately, max out an entire processor core and have to be terminated in task manager, or they max out a core and start eating up memory as shown:

Image

But hey, there is no *32 after the process name, so that's kinda cool...

The Qt4 interface doesn't work ATM. However it seems to play audio tracks fine (tried FLAC and MP3), and video (tried x264 *.mkv), and the hotkeys work :):

Image

I used the dummy interface with OpenGL video output (DirectX worked too - but it disabled Aero). e.g.:

Code: Select all

vlc -I dummy --vout opengl INPUT
There didn't appear to be any memory eating.

Anyway - looking promising :D.

Cheers, Arite.

Thanks for the help Arite. I didn't even think to try the dummy interface, but your suggestion does work. Hopefully there will be more builds in the near future.

Would be interested to learn if there was more development going on for a 64 bit version of VLC. This would make it work better with Handbrake 64 bit from what I understand. As of now they are not compatible it seems.

What?
Some of the features of VLC like its ability to play DVD discs are not leveraged by the 64 Bit version of Handbrake because from what I understand you need both Handbrake and VLC to be 64 bit versions for certain features like that to be symbiotic.

Does that make any sense?

It apparently uses VLC's libdvdcss to read CSS encrypted DVDs (as libdvdcss was removed from Handbrake some time ago), and a 64-bit version of Handbrake doesn't like 32-bit VLC.
