1080p playback choppy (NOT hardware)

Postby refrigerator » 27 Mar 2011 01:23

I've tested 1080p files of various formats (mp4, mkv, flv, etc) on my machine. Playback with VLC is basically impossible. Playback is perfectly smooth with Media Player Classic, so I know that it's not a hardware issue. I've messed around with many possibly relevant settings, but with no success. Any ideas? Most of the older posts on this forum have not been helpful.

For a smooth playback of such files in software mode you need a fast CPU, at least a 2.66 GHz Core2Duo. If you are on Vista or Seven you can also try to enable GPU acceleration, if your video card can handle it: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=79953

As I stated in my post, the issue is NOT hardware. I have a Core2Quad Q9650 (3GHz) and a GeForce GTX 285. My machine has no problem playing 1080p files smoothly using other software like WMP and Media Player Classic.

I tried GPU acceleration, but it didn't help at all.

Sorry, but I'm going back to Windows Media Player for my video playback needs for now. VLC just isn't cutting it for me. I would be happy to try VLC again (it does have some advantages over WMP) if someone can actually help me resolve this choppy playback issue.

Hi,

i just want to say, that i have the same problem. I am fighting against this issue since month. Researches on the web and many invested time did not help solve the problems.
I have a Core I7 930 CPU, Ati HD5770 Graphics Card, Win7 pro 64 Bit System. I use to see videos over a HD Beamer.
The main problem is, that videos partly depending on the video container and codec in most cases are choppy. Real HD videos are one big problem.
Another problems are simple dvds: I remember on older versions of vlc dvds were most choppy. Now i have problems (vlc 1.1.8) that the video seems to be pixellated. ( not sure about the correct naming of the problem). I happens only with the vlc, even on other systems with the same vlc version it seems to work.
The difference there is just another graphics card, as i can see for now. It does also not depend on the container, i tried originally dvd, remuxed as mpg and mkv file. Always pixellated.
Other players don't also have those problems, like for example PowerDVD. On the other hand of course, are there so many advantages and features of vlc, that i cannot and don't want to use any other player. VLC is really nearly perfect, just the issue with the videoquality.
On my old xp system i did not have problems like this, too.

The driver of my graphics card is the most recent of course, too. I am looking every day and hope to find newer ones.

Maybe, there is anyone there outside, who has an idea about this!! i am wondering, why i am abviously nearly the only one, having those problems!

Did you activate GPU decoding?

Yes of course, i did.

I activated it, deactivated it and played around with many other options. Most of them do not change anything, this is unfortunately the frustrating case!
This applies also to the gpu decoding.

I think it would help to explain, where are the differences between for example vlc and powerdvd, that it results in the different/faster video outputs?

Hi,

i have tested a little bit again:
I could not solve the mpg2 problem. But i figured out, that the problem with the pixellated video just concerns one video. In this case it is Dr.House season 3!
I have tried to get a snapshot of it, you can see the squared fields in the video! As i said, i am not sure about my correct naming of the problems.
And again. Other dvds do not have this problems (i tested two other ones). I again checked few preference changes, no success.
I tried to find out, how to send pictures, i found this way and i hope it works:

But now the other problem. Obviously i solved it now. (Sorry for my frustration in previous posts, but i have those problems or similar since months, and sometimes it works ways better than other. It seems also to depend on the
current vlc version):

You never guess, what was the solution for me: I deactivated the gpu-acceleration. And now there is nearly no lagging any more!!! (Talking about choppy hd h264 video)
I truly hope you understood previously, what i meant: Choppy and lagging video is the same for me, i am not native english speaker. Is this the case?
