Fullscreen Mode appears on the wrong screen

Postby b-otto » 25 Mar 2011 17:03

Hi,
I am new to this forum...

VLC Player is a very nice and useful tool!
There is only one minor issue which bugs me a little.
Maybe I have just a wrong setting, don't know.

The problem is as follows:

Not everyone has just one screen.
I am using several screens simulaneously, and while my primary screen is used for email and internet, one of the additional screens is used for watching videos.

When chosing fullscreen mode in VLC Player, the fullscreen video always appears on the primary screen (primary screen according to the windows settings).

Other video players handle this better by displaying the fullscreen video on the SAME screen on which the normal size video window (not fullscreen) has been displayed before chosing fullscreen mode.
Like this, you can display the fullscreen video on whichever screen you like, simply by putting the normal size video window on whichever screen you like and then selecting fullscreen mode.

Unfortunately, with VLC Player I am currently tied to watching fullscreen videos on the primary screen only, but this screen needs to be used for other tasks in my PC setup.

VLC is my favorite player, but this issue sucks a little.

Anyone who is able to help?
Do I need to change a setting?

Thanks!

Change it in the preferences->All->Main INterfaces->Interfaces->Qt

Thanks for the quick reply, but:

Hmm, no my VLC Player doesn't work anymore :-(.

Changed the setting as you described it.
Now on every start of the player the player closes itself after the blink of an eye without any error message.
This happens as well when opening a video file via double click or context menu as when I simply start the player itself via start menu.
Running as an administrator doesn't change this and compatability setting (for example running in Windows XP mode) don't help as well.

It seems that this setting doesn't help, but does the opposite, at least on my PC.

By the way, what is the intention of the setting?

QT = Qucktime Player mode?!?

I wanted to solve the above described issue, not to change the whole behaviour or layout of the player.

How can I get the player working again with having to deinstall or to reset the settings?

= how can I "remove" the QT setting again via registry?
(I am skilled with registry, just need the key and setting)

Cannot set this back to the original setting on a normal way because I cannot access the preferences menu when the player directly closes itself after having opened it.

:-((

Delete %appdata%/vlc/ folder
The Qt in the interface and you can select the screen it should go on by default.

Thanks for the quick reply, again.

I succeeded in resetting VLC Player by deleting the folder you specified.

After that, I have activated the "QT" setting again.
The result has been the same, again (VLC closing itself directly after each start).

I even deinstalled it now and made a fresh install, including the "delete settings" option, but the error remains.
It seems that the QT setting is not working on my PC.

As a workaround, I will try to contact the author of the Skin I use (eDark) to maybe add a "maximize window" function which would then be a workaround for me regarding the issue described in my initial posting.

However - I am hereby putting a feature request to you:
Please change the "Fullscreen Mode" behaviour as requested in my initial posting.
I don't see any disadvantages for any user, I only see advantages.
You can still display the fullscreen mode on the primary display, but you can also chose another display.
Instead of doing this by changing a setting (which doesn't work on my system, see above), what speaks against simply doing this by moving the window to the desired screen before activating the fullscreen mode?
This is nothing but logical, and other video player do it like this as well.

Would be nice if you could follow my suggestion.
Thank you!

You are doing it wrong. In the Qt list of setting, just modify the screen number.

And about your first suggestion, this is already what happens in 1.1.8: it fullscreen where the main interface is.

del app data/vlc ....ok
"Define which screen fullscreen goes = 1"
(default monitor =0, extended display =1)

but back from fullscreen on extended display to windowed mode won't go back to default display. :(
Is there some setting to change this?

This is obviously a bug as the player no longer goes full screen based on which screen the player was on at the time. I am on a Windows XP64 box.

I just upgraded yesterday and today I spent 20 minutes trying to figure out why it would only fullscreen on my default monitor.

The QT default setting for "Define which screen fullscreen goes" was set to -1, I would think that would mean whatever screen the player was on. I have now tried -2, 0, 1, 2, and 3 and no matter what if I fullscreen or maximize it goes to screen 1.

I'm gonna have to downgrade until this is resolved.

Thanks a million for the wonderful player as it does absolutely rock, but the current version won't let me fullscreen it on my TV, so that's a bit non-functional for me.

If anyone has any other ideas on how to work around this, please post away!

Thanks,

Marc

I uninstalled 1.1.8 and reinstalled 1.1.7 and it worked like it used to, but then I realized somehow after the upgrade I had started running it in skinned mode..... and that had been the problem.

How do you set the monitor for fullscreen and maximized play in skinned mode?

I've re-installed 1.1.8 and am running it just fine in normal player mode.

My apologies for calling it a bug, but it is strange that skinned mode behaves differently than QT mode.

They use different engine. And AFAIK there isn't an option to change fullscreen device in any interface. Only VOUTs have options like this.
