mpeg-2 file won't play

Hello everyone!!
I've a big problem and it cracks the hell out of me!!!!!
I've a .mpg file with a MPEG-2 codec, about 3Gigs big and vlc won't play it.
It's a movie and it only shows a picture from it.
Please help me!!! Thanks!

...what I said wasn't really helpful...
So let's start over:
I use VLC on Ubuntu and tried to play a movie with it.
Its a .mpg file.
According to the VLC codec details it is:
Video Codec: MPEG-1/2 Video (mpgv)
Resolution:720x576
Frame Rate: 50 (actually another program says it's 25)
Bitrate:6000 kbps

Audio Codec: MPEG Audio Layer 1/2/3 (mpga)

Size:3.4 GB

I've got to edit my post: I run VLC on both Win XP and Ubuntu and on both it doesn't work properly (the playback of that file)
