VLC Player Won't Play .mp4 Format Using Windows XP

Postby Turku99 » 14 Oct 2009 01:32

I downloaded the latest VLC player and it won't play my mp4 video I made using my Nokia phone. I am using windows XP SP3. It plays but the screen is black (no video). The scroll bar moves across the bottom of the player and it has sound but no image. It works fine on Windows Media Player. I don't know how to post the clip for examination.

mp4 is a container format. what audio/video coding is used in that container? Check phone specifications to find out.

Provide a sample of the problematic file.

I register to this forum only ta say THANK YOU for the above link that easily helped with the problem. I tried so many forums that were saying nonsense things for non programmers and continue searching for an easier way and not a complicated one to fix my problem. Hopefully I found this way without using any programming at all. Thanks again!

I don't know if anybody watches this thread anymore, but I have a similar problem that was not addressed in the above link. When I try to play my MP4 file I don't even get a black screen and working progress bar. The player simply ends the video before it starts. The title of my video file flashes in the title bar and then VLC goes back to its default screen, waiting for a new video to be selected. Please help!!

Open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) then start the playback. When the playback has ended, copy the messages here (or to pastebin in case the forum complains).

I just dumped the whole file here last night, as I was in a hurry, but I have removed it now. I found from the debugger lines below that the problem was a corrupted file.

mp4 debug: found an empty box (null size)
mp4 debug: dumping root Box "root"
mp4 debug: | + wide size 8
mp4 debug: | + mdat size 38538646
mp4 debug: file type box missing (assuming ISO Media file)
mp4 error: MP4 plugin discarded (no moov, foov, moof box)

Thanks for the help, I had no idea there was a debug function in VLC!

After updating to VLC 2.0.1 on Windows XP SP3, MP4 movies play poorly. They do have picture and sound but are slow and pixillated with many stops and starts. The previous VLC version played MP4 movies fine. Any suggestions?

No - I switched to DirectX and it made no difference - still barely plays the movie, freezing often and for long periods. Also disabled Accelerated video output/Overlay video output per the link you suggested but that made no difference. Other ideas? Is the previous version that worked still available?

What does VLC message dialog complain during playback?

Yes. All VLC versions can be found from http://downloads.videolan.org/vlc/

The playback is now worse. It freezes on the first mage of the mp4 video and does not play through. I do not see any error messages. Is this a known problem with the new version? What previous version do you suggest I go back to? I do not remember the last version I had before I updated to VLC 2.0.1 but whatever it was it played mp4's fine.

I have exactly the same problem. VLC plays .mp4 audio but not the video. The curious thing is it did once. Now it's stopped for some reason! I've uninstalled it twice and downloaded the most recent version but it still refuses to play .mp4 video. I'm at the end of what I know can anyone help. Thanks
