Video freezes on 1.1.5. Didn't before.

Postby Scrappy » 29 Nov 2010 20:54

I let VLC download the latest update, now it freezes a lot whilst playing video. Audio continues. Trying to quit the program stops the audio but freezes the entire app. I have to end-task in task manager. It freezes more quickly when I move the tracking/position bar.

The previous version of 1.1.4 worked perfectly for playing videos, but had a few minor bugs, so I upgraded as it said it contained several bug fixes.

Video type is identified as H264 MPEG-4 AVC with MPEG AAC audio.

Is this a known problem, and if so, how can I fix it?

Alternatively, where can I download earlier versions?

I'm having exactly the same problem. It started working again after I reinstalled VLC and restarted Windows, but a few hours later it went back to this same problem. I can also confirm that the same freeze occurs with .wmv, .avi, and .mkv files.

If you can unpack tar files, you can get 1.1.4 on the ftp archive: http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/

Will post again after I've installed the old version.

Tar files are source codes. For Win32 binaries there are .exe, .7z and .zip files (check out Win32 subdirs).

For playback problems, remove %appdata%\vlc folder and try again.

Removing %appdata%\vlc has no effect.

Going back to a previous version works.

Maybe the next version should have a slightly larger beta test group before being publically released and recommended as an upgrade

All VLC releases are public, including nightlies and RCs.

mdx79: have you tried GPU decoding?

It seems you mis-understood what I meant.

I understand nightlies are available to everyone. People can use them at there own risk.

However, I assumed that certain versions are considered "stable" and "known-good", and only these versions are offered by the program itself as an upgrade path. So for people who don't want to use beta versions, they can follow the "stable"/"known-good" path. But this path was broken when the program updated itself from 1.4 to 1.5. Even worse, it was described as a "bugfix", when it actually made things a lot worse for a number of people.

Therefore, it was a suggestion to increase the group of people who test these versions before releasing them (I assume this is how you release them as no one has access to even just all common hardware)

Please correct me if I am wrong in my assumptions.

Same issue here, exactly, man it is annoying.

I'm seeing the same issues. I updated my video driver and it now plays a little longer before freezing. However, it still freezes after playing for a few minutes.

GPU decoding doesn't help.

I am having the same issue, the video freezes after a few seconds but the audio continues. It has done it with .mov, .mvk, and avi files. I reinstalled it last night and that fixed it for a couple of uses, but this morning it was back to the same. I still had the install for 1.1.4 and reinstalled it. So far it seems to be working. I guess I am glad I am not the only one having issues, at least it means I don't have some previously undiscovered system issue.

Same thing for me, too. Windows XP Pro. Updated 24 hours ago to 1.1.5 through the update menu. Video freezes or is totally black, while audio continues. I thought it was a problem with a particular video (AVI, MPEG-4 ASP) but now it's happened with others. Once it freezes, very difficult to shut it down. Eventually task manager kills it.

I'm going back to 1.1.4.

Confirming old version still works fine. Just downgrade.
