Installation Question

Postby vlcclv » 10 Nov 2010 12:13

I have a question regarding VLC installation.

Does it matter if you just unzip the VLC archive and copy the files / directories to a folder and create a shortcut (and associations if desired), or is a formal install process needed (running the installer)?

The VLC download page implies that one can simply download the zip file and copy the contents. This, of course, is preferred, so if it is all that is needed, thank you for the option. Is a simple copy operation supposed to work fine to get VLC up and running?

Thanks!

Thank you for the answer. I appreciate it. BTW, before posting I took a good read through the wiki and the FAQ and could not find the answer, which seems like something that is important to a new user - so either I missed it, or perhaps someone would like to add it to the wiki or FAQ.

A follow-up question:

If one sets up VLC by simply extracting the VLC archive's files / subdirectories into a directory, then in order to COMPLETELY remove VLC from the system, is the process simply to remove that new directory (containing the files / subdirectories from the original archive), or is there more to be removed (other directories, registry entries, etc.)?

I did set some file associations using the VLC Preferences dialog box, so I imagine those will need to be reset using the Folder Options dialog box in Windows Explorer.

if u want to remove vlc completely u also have to delete
vlc config. folder

C:\User\yourname\AppData\Roaming\vlc

may be something is left in registry too
but nothing which will disturb windows

with registry tools like ccleaner u can safely remove most unused entries with 1 mouse click
