VLC Dual Monitor Output

Postby Jack Hammer » 08 Oct 2010 19:23

I would like to know if there is any method of displaying the same video onto two or more monitors with the same audio / video sync. I do not know much about VLC but I have looked up streaming and that doesn't seem to be applicable and also wallpaper mode does not seem to work.

As an example would be the images above. I currently have three monitors (Usually four) and it is cool when you have the same video playing on all monitors. Thugh the only way I have been able to do it is by opening multiple instances of VLC and timing them myself, as you can see even then there are a few miliseconds difference between the videos.

I am guessing since there has been no reply that there is no, conviniant, way to do it? Other than opening various instances of VLC and syncing them all up manually?

hmmm u have 3 or 4 monitors and want EXACTLY the same picture on every one ?
well i have an easy solution for you :-)

why not use splitters ???
like this one

Image

these are available for vga, dvi and hdmi
(there are cheap Y cables too, but i am not sure if u can use 2 monitors at the same time with a simple Y cable)

if your monitors are all different
u should better ask the seller of theses splitters if it will work
i am not sure how windows will react with its pnp when 3 or 4 different screens are connected with 1 port of your gfx card

BTW:
2 monitors should work without a splitter
just connect them to your gfx card if u have a "new" one with 2 ports
in gfx driver u can select to display same picture on both screens
with 2 gfx cards or some ati and matrox gfx cards u can use 3 monitors too without a special splitter

Thanks for the info. Though unfortunatly I do not want to duplicate the screen outputs onto each monitor: Merely have the option to duplicate VLC's output onto multiple screens. I could with my current setup have mirrored desktops on all monitors, although that is not what I want (Defeats the whol larger working area imho). Just when I am relaxing and watching music videos, or screening a new DVD I think it would be very useful to have the same image on different screens.

(My current setup)

You can use the Clone video output filter to duplicate the video, creating separate windows for each clone.
You can set this in the Preferences (if you know how/can find out) or by using the "Effects and Filters" window (Ctrl-E).

I have not found a way to automatically display the clones on all three monitors as soon as the video starts.
For you, though, this should at least be a step up from starting three different instances of VLC Media Player.

Nice wallpaper, btw. 8)

Very helpful information! I will try to configure this now, see whether I can get it to work. Like you said it is a lot better than starting three instances and manually trying to sync them all up (Just having sound playing on one). That takes around ten minutes to get them all perfectly synced up anyway, by that time half the video has gone (Or all of it). Thanks a lot!

EDIT: Got it to work (With some fiddeling)

P.S/ I also have RocketDock which really looks cool (I know kind of off topic, but shhh!)

N.B/ The only problems with this, one of which you stated, are it's inability to auotmatically start on load. Also the windows will repositions, resize and reformat everytime a new file is opened (Makes it quite irritating for short music videos). I have found a really old topic: viewtopic.php?t=31608
In which it has been suggested that there be a shortcut button, or at least options for one in the 'Clone' preferences.

I was never really a fan of VideoLan Client (Mainly due to its previous lack of codecs (MKV) and inability to load third party codecs (CoreAVC)). Though after seeing these nifty features I am turning very quickly. I might even donate (Me being a very poor student but avid supporter of freeware).
