VLC 1.1.4 on Windows 7 crashes playing audio CDs

Postby brundleflyguy » 17 Sep 2010 15:17

I have two machines now that have both crash when trying to play audio CDs. Both are Windows 7 machines (one is 64bit, one 32bit). Has anyone seen this issue or have some suggestions to try?

Thanks.

So is there a fix for this, or is the only solution to go back to 1.0.5?

I just posted this on another, older thread, but then found this newer one when I searched the forum for "crash playing CDs". The fix I found, based on a comment on the bug ticket page (http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/3804) is to set the "Album art download policy" to "Manual download only".

Tools->Preferences ->Interface. Then, where it says "Album art download policy", use the dropdown and select "Manual download only". That has worked reliably for me on my Windows 7 system.

My problem is on XP SP3 but may have relevance.
Having just installed VLC I was amazed to see the app disappear when I tried to play an audio cd.
My Album art download policy was already set to Manual download only (although this is not how VLC behaves - it downloads stuff without asking).
When restarting VLC I was informed that VLC had crashed and did I want to send a bug report to the developers?
I messed about a bit and in the Simple Interface Settings page ticked
Allow only one instance
Problem solved, although why this should be I don't know.

Hi All,

I can confirm that VLC 1.1.6 and 1.1.7 crash instantly when attempting to play a DVD on several PCs I've tested running Windows XP SP3 x86.
Playing DVDs used to work properly (1.0.5?) and this issue has arisen lately (due to Microsoft or VLC updates?).
I've been unable to reproduce the issue on my Windows 7 x64 PC so far.
Hopefully this helps the team track down a fix!

The primary reason we have VLC installed for our client is playing DVDs (along with whatever random web media they manage to download).
In the meantime we've switched them to SMPlayer until we can get VLC working properly again.

I'll try switching the album art setting as suggested in this thread and I'll post back if that solves the problem!
