Missing audio on some AVI files

Postby robertin75 » 29 Jul 2010 15:09

Hello:

I have some AVI files in which not only the audio is missing on several parts of the video but I get other problems like low volume on several parts of the file. Tried to play the file on another PC and the audio runs just fine (no mute and no volume problems).

I tried VLC LAN, Windows Media Player and Winamp and all of them show the audio problem.

Reinstalling the audio drivers had no effect.

Also when I stream them on my ipod touch I don't get this problem but I can only hear on the right side of my headphones.

Anyone knows what may be happening? Maybe a codec problem?

Please finde the screenshot of this file using GSPot

Image

Thanks

Does it help if you remux the file?

How do I do that? On the VLC LAN player?

Thanks

You meant demux, right?

By the way I converted the file to other formats like mpeg, mp4 and still the same problem.

Ok this is getting really weird.

I converted the AVI to MP4 using [some] Video Converter and transferred it to my ipod touch and the sound is not gone in parts but the problem is that I can only hear the right audio channel.

Please, cut a short sample of this file, 10 MB should be enough, and upload it to some file sharing site like Rapidshare or Megaupload.

Use DGsplit and read here about how to do it:

Ok, here's the file:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=CMT5XUDR

It's 19 MB.

This is what happens on my PC:

Almost immediately (2 seconds after) when the video starts, the volume goes really down, like 80%.
From minute 1:22 to 2:02 (the end of the video) the audio is totaly gone.

Thanks and hope we can figure out what is happening because it's so strange.

I forgot to add that whenever there is audio it's always on the right channel. Left channel has no sound

I couldn't say at all, but it's not the file.
Have you used Tools --- Message --- verbosity =2 to ascertain what goes wrong at 1:22?

Because I was waiting with great anticipation for the audio to cut off and it never did, lol. I also didn't get that drop at the beginning.

I will say however that I too have a piece of video I recorded with VLC that has audio skips on my system, yet when I uploaded it to youtube, it played perfectly. So maybe some systems have issues with playback. But it isn't the file.

No I have never used the Message option.

Makes me think it's the audio hardware as I had never seen something like this before. Nothing really makes any sense.

Well try the message option. Just run the video, open tools/message, change the verbosity to 2... save the info you get and post it here.

I'm sure someone more intelligent than I will be able to decipher the cause.
